Did you people see the same film I saw?

Helllins

It is both painfully honest and laugh-out-loud funny at the same time.

I was skeptical about watching this movie at first, even though I generally love Studio Ghibli movies. The lack of dialogue worried me. I don't care for the silent stuff, and thats just a preference, but I was completely wrong to question The Red Turtle. Its moving in ways live action movies can't quite hit you. The visuals aren't so bad either. This was downright enchanting, I cried like three times, so worth watching.

Good movie that differentiates it self from many others. The lack of dialogue would help you concentrate on the visuals. The movie is fairly slow but the slow parts is what create the feeling of realism. The realism however, clashes with the surreal stuff that occur later on in the movie. I found my self trying to understand what is going on, and while waiting for answers, I couldn't enjoy the movie. I got annoyed by things like "the invisible force that destroys the rafts" and "why the dead turtle turns into a woman and has kids"? You wont get any answers even after the film ends. The more I think of it, it reminds me of the series Lost. You can only speculate that this wasn't taking place in the realm of reality. You can also guess that it wasn't in the hero's imagination because crazy things happened after his death. One can only conclude that it was a parable.I look around the net to find a compelling explanation. Some said the turtle was the nature helping him and that the woman was the "good times of his life". Most of the reviews praising the deeper warm meanings. After some thought, I disagree. I mean... the turtle was stopping him from escaping, so what if he tried to leave the island one more time, after the turtle died? To me, the meaning is a more sinister one: The island is the place where we are born. The turtle is the government or the society that stops your dreams of living a life as you want it to be. It pins you down on an island, leaving you defenseless against all odds, and wants you to get a woman and be a family man. This is what society expects of you. You cant escape, you cant win. The only way out is death. Nobody will ever help you. And your son is taken over by government agents (green turtles) and conform to the "norm" as well. Wham, mind blown!

Highly unusual. Enormously atmospheric. Ultimately moving. The French animated film "The Red Turtle" will not bowl you over so much as it will quietly bring you under it's alluring spell.Writer/Director Michael Dudok de Wit, Music Director Laurent Perez Del Mar and the animation team led by Supervisor Jean-Christophe Lie collectively impart an enduring message about, among other themes, becoming an adult, creating a family, forgiveness and letting go. And if that seems like a lot to chew on, perhaps "The Red Turtle" is best summed up thusly: A man has not lived, and certainly never LOVED, until he comes to know those who are more important than he.

The Red Turtle was nothing short of a stunning watch with top-notch animation from Studio Ghibli and beautiful direction. The plot is a heartfelt tale of a marooned man and his encounter with a mystical red turtle and their journey together (anything more said would probably ruin it). Despite not a single word being uttered throughout the whole film, the incredible soundtrack and the mesmerising artwork does brilliantly to convey emotion through its use of colour and score. With no dialogue, The Red Turtle is an art film but an engaging one for all to enjoy regardless of age and language.Considering its run-time of just 1 hour and 20 minutes, I would say it's definitely worth a watch
