Boring

Mabel Munoz

Just intense enough to provide a much-needed diversion, just lightweight enough to make you forget about it soon after it’s over. It’s not exactly “good,” per se, but it does what it sets out to do in terms of putting us on edge, which makes it … successful?

The opening credits in English read, 'Thriller: A Cruel Picture' not whatever nonsense IMDb chooses as its title. If there was ever one single film Quinton Tarantino based his 'Kill Bill' series on, it was this. There is VERY little dialogue. The Swedish film doesn't even need subtitles. The entire story is told through character actions which involve slow paced scenes showing in detail simple actions like walking from one place to another without any musical score. It's also important to note that the American DVD release is the "Vengeance Edition" which I suspect is the censored version. The version I watch was on YouTube which includes HARD CORE porn scenes! How "hard core?" Well, it not only shows real intercourse but actual ejaculation. Amazing the stuff they allow on YouTube without any warning.Just to be clear, this isn't a porn film. The plot: After being raped by a homeless man as a child Madeline is left mute and lives on a farm with her elderly parents. She's picked up by a scumbag whom kidnaps her and gets her addicted to heroine to force her to prostitute. At first Madeline resists the customers and her pimp gouges out one of her eyes as punishment. Won't that harm his investment in her earnings? Madeline eventually saves up thousands of dollars in tips and spends all her spare time learning martial arts, to shoot, and to race car drive. All this is a buildup to her final fury of hunting down her pimp and all her clients with a sawed off shotgun. Each of the shooting deaths are shown in extreme slow motion. As I said, all of this is explained through actions with hardly any dialogue at all.The similarities between this and 'Kill Bill' are overwhelming. It's good film making for Giallo and Euro-grindhouse fans.Just be prepared that the film isn't anything more than the brief plot I described and each scene is very slow moving.

I found this movie to be difficult to review mainly due to the fact that I am watching it in 2011. I am watching it 37years after it came out.So the "shocking scenes of violence" is no longer shocking. The "shocking story" is also no longer shocking. hence i will review the movie on how much/little I enjoyed the movie.I watched the uncut version of the movie which featured unsimulated sex scenes. There is actual penetration shown. However apart from the purpose of titillation the scenes were actually unneeded as they were just cut scenes. There are parts of the movie that also serves little to no purpose other then to showcase the "shocking violence" (circa 1974). These scenes made the movie disjointed. The ending and the vengeance was also so so (circa 2011 violence). The pacing of the movie is slow until about partway. I don't know, while I thought the movie was not bad, its not what you call enjoyable. I think thats the problem with genre movies like this. It relies on the "shocking" but time has move on and the shock effect isn't there (probably not a good commentary on present society). However I would say its watchable slightly entertaining.

As many into the exploitation/horror and revenge genre has heard of this Swedish delight. Long before IKEA became the Swedish thing there was an director, Vibenius, who made classics in the genre but had one problem, distribution. After Swedish MPAA saw the movie they really mashed it up by cutting it. And the cut version became available everywhere except for France were the uncut version somehow appeared in dirty cinema's. After a fight for the rights of the movie and some bankruptcy of dealers the movie came in hands of Synapse who restored the movie and brought it out in the cut version and in a 25000 limited edition in his full glory with a lot of extra's. This version I have. The uncut version is somehow what Last House On The Left should have been, normally it would have been a XXX movie but no actor agreed to have intercourse on screen. So it happened that LHOTL became what it is today. So you can say that this is what LHOTL should have been, with full frontal nudity of Christina Lindberg, coming out of soft core nudies. It even contains the the live action in front of the camera but so it was labeled under porn. In fact it never was, it became on of the first roughie revenge flicks loved by many as like Tarantino. The storyline is simple, child got raped and in her teens drugged and raped again, so she takes revenge but when she takes revenge it's all filmed in slomo, well done for the time being. Catch yourself a copy because the price for a copy is rising.

The best thing about this movie is how Tarantino made it better... by dressing up Darryl Hannah like the character. Other than that, this is a true grind house flick filled with the usual excess amounts of sex, blood, and violence. Funny thing is how this movie was made by the Swedes and this must have been revenge for the Orson Welles 'Cuckoo Clock' monologue from The Third Man, because this is as sadistic as it gets. Not even Bergman's The Virgin Spring was this cruel from it's fellow countryman (but Craven's Last House on the Left is a nice counter piece). Tough it is a satisfying rental (or to own for true exploitation bluffs) as mentioned before the strength is actually Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2. Watch this movie as a double-bill with I Spit on Your Grave and see how much man hating can ensue, or if you're a guy, how much you hate to have a penis at that time.
