Young history buff Kevin can scarcely believe it when six dwarfs emerge from his closet one night. Former employees of the Supreme Being, they've purloined a map charting all of the holes in the fabric of time and are using it to steal treasures from different historical eras. Taking Kevin with them, they variously drop in on Napoleon, Robin Hood and King Agamemnon before the Supreme Being catches up with them.

It really made me laugh, but for some moments I was tearing up because I could relate so much.

The movie is wonderful and true, an act of love in all its contradictions and complexity

This movie tries so hard to be funny, yet it falls flat every time. Just another example of recycled ideas repackaged with women in an attempt to appeal to a certain audience.

Great example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.

Maybe Time Bandits is just one of those movies that you needed to see as a kid to truly appreciate it. This movie wasn't that funny, it wasn't that action-packed and it wasn't that entertaining. Most of it didn't even make sense. I don't get the hype surrounding it.

I first saw this film when I was 10 years old. My Dad took me to see it as I thought it looked fun and since it was PG and had a kid in it who was approximately the same age, it was assumed to be a children's movie. Not quite. I know the Pg-13 rating had not been devised yet when this film was released, but if it had been, I think this film certainly should have earned it. To me and my 10 year old mind, it just had a lot of disturbing images. It was mild at first as the child was obviously being neglected by his parents and they watched a TV show where contestants in a game show had to undergo somewhat harsh and disturbing tasks just to win some household appliances. I'm sure it's supposed to be a clever satire on consumerism, but a 10 year old doesn't know that. After that, it was downhill. Little people eating rats, a man losing his arm in an arm wrestling match, exploding people and exploding dogs were just a few of the items that bothered me at that time. I learned much later that Terry Gilliam is known for having a Black sense of humor, but I didn't know it at the time. Not to spoil the ending, but it was also disturbing and un-satisfying to see what Kevin was left with by the end of the picture. I'm not saying the film should be banned or edited or whatever. It's an OK film for adults and mature teens. Just not for young children as the PG rating is a little mis-leading. I still find Terry Gilliam's sense of humor to be a little off-putting, but if you enjoy that, it's fine. Just be careful and think it over before you let young kids 12 and under watch it.

Time Bandits (1981) Plot In A Paragraph: A young boy accidentally joins a band of time traveling dwarfs as they jump from era to era looking for treasure to steal. The first time I seen this movie I was about 7 or 8, and I loved it. I didn't rewatch it for over 20 years and they next time I seen it, I got a free copy with a newspaper (Still the copy in my collection today) and I actually turned it off thinking "How on earth did I ever like this??" And put it down to being a child. So I wasn't sure what I'd think watching it now!! I chose to watch it with my 11 year old son, who had never seen it. Connery doesn't appear till the 45 min mark, and there isn't much for him to do really before he departs about 10 minutes later. He pops up to utter 2 lines as a foreman right at the end, in an ending that was reshot long after filming was completed to include Connery when he was in a London to meet his accountant. This had the potential to be hilarious, but it just isn't!! I still struggled to get through this, but my son seemed to enjoy it "it was OK. But I wouldn't call it a Sean Connery movie" was his assessment!! Some movies still make me feel like a child, but this isn't one of them. The ending is quite a surprise if you have never seen it though.Connery widely signed on for a percentage of the gross instead of a fee. This turned out to be a brilliant movie as Time Bandits was the 10th highest grossing movie of 1981, grossing $42 million at the domestic box office. Once again (like in Murder On The Orient Express and A Bridge Too Far) Connery scored big when he wasn't the main attraction of the movie.

Terry Gilliam's made many movies throughout his career since being the American of the (Mostly) British comedy gang Monty Pyhton. He co-directed Holy Grail with the other Terry, Jones. Then Jabberwocky, and now this. I suggest having this be an introduction to Gilliam to your child in a double feature with the Baron's film for they are easily his most child friendly for seven or eight year olds (I'd hold off on Brazil until ten for the youngling, despite the briefness of the language and other R- rated things). Alright now, this may not be the most enjoyable seeing it for the first time as an adult. I'd think I'd have a higher enjoyment if I grew up on it. But that only means that you'd better show it to your kid during a history and adventure loving phase. Since I didn't grow up on it, I haven't the appreciation as someone raised with it. But I can't deny its quality, eight out of ten.
