This movie is the proof that the world is becoming a sick and dumb place
View MoreThe greatest movie ever!
good back-story, and good acting
The movie is wonderful and true, an act of love in all its contradictions and complexity
View MoreIt's a wonder this film was ever made. It's not To the Wonder. It is Too Too Awful. I am stunned that Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams and Javier Bardem signed on to make this drivel. I am stunned that I watched to the end. It's such a failed attempt at an artsy movie. All of the twirling around outside and whispered minimalist dialogue and just bizarre stuff like Marina licking a tree outside. And the flashbacks and flash forwards...too much weirdness. I don't want to see any of these actors again for a good long time because I am ticked off at all of them.
View MoreI am a huge Terrence Malick fan and have loved everything he has done, up until this. This is not a good film. It's drawn out, has a very uninteresting script, and just fails to entertain, stimulate, or do anything really. It's a two hour wide angle shot of Ben Affleck being in a shitty relationship. Hmm...That being said, the camera work is pretty great, as is the case with most of Malick's work, but that's pretty much it. There is almost no story to speak of, to even remember as I write this review. The French woman could have gone back home at any time and spared everyone the pain of their crappy relationship. Instead, she decides to draw out what everyone knows is a doomed scenario.Malick should honestly have retired with the Tree of Life. It was excellent, and utilized the dreamy, wide-angle drawn out sequences very well, unlike here, where they are relied on to make up for a lack of substance.I don't really recommend this film to anyone. If you are a Malick fan, it will severely diminish your appreciation for him, as it is as pretentious as it is boring.
View MoreI love obscure movies. I love indie flix. I don't need everything spelled out for me but WTF. WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THIS MOVIE? If the writer was trying to get across the emotions of loneliness, depression, desperation, frustration and being pushed to the brink of rage and suicide then this movie works. I never felt or saw the Wonder. Every person in the movie was depressing. The setting was beautiful and dreary at the same time. I never felt love between the two main characters. The only love in the movie was between the mother and daughter and then the mother just let that disappear. Why? She seemed joyful and capable of even more joy but he was an absolute drip. Even. When their relationship was good it was her effort. He was an energy suck. A taker. He should remain alone in that town forever. The priest needed to get out of dodge. What a depressing little town. And his job? More misery. I didn't blame her at all for the affair. I actually don't understand why she ever went back to him when he was such a wimp by letting her leave the first time. Her friend had the right idea, leave and be free. There's so much more to life than that lifeless man and miserable town. Save yourself and leave! What an absolutely miserable movie. I kept thinking something big would happen. That something would break the man open wide but nope. I think many many many people are just like him but why oh why would we want to see a movie about it? It truly missed the mark on all accounts. It really deserved a 0. Waste of space and time.
View MoreThere is a amazing film in here, somewhere. I love the music choices, the actors and the cinematography. There are some really interesting scenes in here. But the film falls on Malick's usual traps. The Thin Red Line was saved for me when we actually got to know the characters a bit better. But the fault of Malick is his love for voice over and character's running around in pretty pictures. In the scenes where the characters actually gets to act against one another are great. And do not think Malick should have thrown all voice over and all silent moments. They are especially effective in the first part of the film when Olga Kurylenko & Ben Affleck fall in love. But it simply gets tedious when that's the entire film. There are scenes like when Affleck throws Kurylenko out of a car which could have been amazing, but because the way the film is made it loses a bit of it's impact. The scene where Javier Bardem talks to the janitor in the church was amazing and it became even more apparent that Malick really can direct actors in the scene with the friend played by Romina Mondello. If only Terrence Malick did not edit all these moments away, his films would be much better.
