Best movie ever!

The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.

It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.

Having not seen Top Gun before but of course knowing of the film and the significance it had upon Tom Cruise's career path, knowing how raved and praised it has become in today's day and age, one decided in watching for the first time. Having somewhat high expectations based on the fact that the film seems to be universally praise from fanboys, Top Gun was a letdown. We seen a very young Tom Cruise, as well as a young Val Kilmer and they are both decent but overall the film doesn't offer much and is actually quite boring. There are the typical drama that occur but in general nothing too much that grabs the attention. Also the film offers several cringe and corny moments, but that appears to be a major reason as to why it is so loved? Also it was very clear they had to have a character killed off (in this case being Goose) to build upon sympathy and have another motor, but his death really wasn't as heartwarming as imagined. His character came off as somewhat of a joke anyway so the death didn't leave much of an impression. Furthermore, Top Gun isn't nearly as good as it has been praised for, and once can't understand the constant hype it has received. The fact that they are making a sequel over 30 years later, shows that people really love this movie. But will it be a mistake? How much hype will that have? We know once that roll out comes out and the sequel in near on its way, a lot of people will start reviewing and rewatching (or watching for the first time Top Gun). Just sit back and wait for it. 2019.

Yep. IMO - There's no doubt about it - Tom Cruise (birth-name - Thomas Mapother IV) is, without question, the absolute, most vacant, shallow, one-dimensional, and unconvincing actors of his generation, bar none.To be sure - Had all of the carefully choreographed, daredevil flying sequences been edited out of "Top Gun" - Then, yes - This 1986 action movie would've amounted to being absolutely nothing.'Cause zero-charisma Cruise (and all of his irksome superficiality) certainly couldn't carry this picture and keep things interesting for even a minute.... It's true.

Simple storyline well executed. This was one of the first great surround sound releases and the cinemaphography was spectacular. Many stars decent acting. Not all movies need to be artistic, more importantly they need to entertain and Top Gun does this well. Watch it and enjoy.

This movie is a time vault of 80's nostalgia. It is Miami Vice on military grade steroids with its catch phrases, male macho orgasms and Hollywood myths. It is every thing John Wayne represented in the 40's and 50's on westerns and war movies, but set in the 80's.Top Gun is a movie about a character named Maverick and is played by a young Tom Cruise. Maverick is a loose cannon who causes lots of problems, including a death of a friend. He doesn't like following rules or being a team player. Hence the name, Maverick. While the casting is perfect for this movie, the direction and the script is filled with too many factual errors. There is also the problem with stereotypical representation of women and Russians. It is 100% pro-American and anti-everything not American.I saw this movie in 1989 when I was at Parris Island. My platoon had just won the rifle range and our SDI promised us a day off on Sunday. That morning he rolled in a cart with a small screened television and a VCR. In popped a pirated copy of an unknown movie. We huddled around the television with the opening scenes. We all cheered, hooted and hollered. It was a grand moment for us.However after 27 years I watched it again and could not bear even a few minutes of the movie. I could see all types of visual flaws in the movie, such as the opening statement which uses the word "insure" rather than "ensure". facepalm. The movie is OK, I just do not like it. As a young kid in the Marines it was wonderful because I was a brainwashed kid ready to go off to war with what ever enemy I was told to point my gun. I didn't care if the acting was terrible or if the technical errors existed in the movie. I just wanted to see T&A of Kelly McGillis and fighter jets. This movie does not stand the test of time. In the coming decades it will be forgotten like many movies from the 20's and 30's. It isn't amazing and it isn't Oscar worthy except for some technical aspects.
