Sadly Over-hyped
Am I Missing Something?
I was totally surprised at how great this film. You could feel your paranoia rise as the film went on and as you gradually learned the details of the real situation.
View MoreIt's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
View MoreA very funny movie from Mr Perry, one of his best movies by far. It makes a change from those awful Medea movies where he dresses as a woman (and not very convincingly at that) Tasha Smith is Brilliant as the acerbic tongued Angela and she steals every scene she is in. The story line is not new and the ending somewhat predictable, but it is overall good entertainment and well worth a watch.Janet Jackson is the weakest of the actresses in this movie but that doesn't spoil the enjoyment. This is a much better movie than the awful sequel 'Why did I get married too'
View MoreWhy Did I Get Married is a movie about four couples that are college friends, who go through trials and obstacles within their marriage that become very challenging at times but they try their hardest, with the help and encouragement from their friends to try and makes things work for the best. The movie demonstrates the difficulties of trying to maintain a marriage when things such a work, children, and temptations get in the way. Ultimately, the theme of the movie is marriage. Janet Jackson plays the role of Patricia who is obviously a wife, friend and doctor. She wrote a book about the couples and their traditional "couple retreat". As the couples attend the retreat there are issues that arise that make them question "why did I get married?" Patricia and her husband Gavin, which is played by actress Malik Yoba, portray to have the perfect marriage. Patricia's profession is in communication and relationships so they are perceived as the happy couple with the least issues because of the knowledge Patricia has on relationships. The couple lost their one and only son in a tragic car accident. In the movie, the death of their son is not acknowledged until one of the friends Mike, played by Richard T. Jones shares personal information that Gavin confided in him about. Mike shares with the group that Gavin blamed his wife Patricia for the death of their son because she did not strap him in the car seat properly. Patricia confronts Gavin in the privacy in their home about the conversation in his home. Gavin expresses the lack of concern he feels from Patricia because she does not speak about their son. Patricia knows that she is looked upon as "Perfect Patty" and admits to feeling guilty for the death of her son. Mike and Sheila, played by Jill Scott are another couple who battle with problems in their relationship. Mike is no longer compassionate or attracted to his wife and makes jokes about her appearance and makes her feel like he will not want her until she loses weight. He does not put her first and does not treat her how a husband ought to treat his wife. Sheila brings along her "friend" Trina played by Denise Boutte who later admits to secretly having an affair with Mike. Mike finally comes clean about his feelings about Trina and the couple split. Terry who is played by Tyler Perry himself is married to Diane who is played by Sharon Leal. Diane is very successful in her career and puts a lot of time into it. The couple have two children and Terry seeks more attention from his wife and more passion put into their relationship. Diane does not give Terry a lot of time because of her career and forgets important events such as his birthday. Terry wants more children by Diane but she had her tubes tied without making that decision with her husband because she is focused on her career and does not want any more children. This takes a toll on their marriage. Angela is played by actor Tasha Smith and his married to actor Michael Jai White. Their marriage is very interesting because they argue and fight constantly. Angela is a very outspoken person and can be insensitive at times. She is unhappy about the current situation her and Marcus are in because he has a job at her hair salon which she feels without her he would not be bringing in his weight as a husband. Marcus also still has relations with the mother of one of his children who disrespects Angela by coming by her job and making remarks to the children about Angela. Just like in another Tyler Perry Movie, A Diary of a Mad Black Women, men and women experience many emotional and troubling times in their marriage that they fight through demonstrating how strong you have to be in a marriage sometimes. There are many motifs in the film that support the theme of marriage. All four couples have their own problems within their marriage as mentioned earlier, that they struggle with while trying to keep their marriage. Tyler Perry shows the pain, hurt, happiness, and more felt between each couple throughout the film. Overall, most of the movie has great, normal lighting. The couples retreat is in the mountains, but to keep the focus on the couples, natural lighting is used. The more serious scenes, there is not a bright light used to show the depth of the scene and a sense of reality. The theme of marriage is important and Tyler Perry does a great job by using four couples with four 8 different personalities to show the ups and downs marriage can hold.
View MoreWith an arrangement of a star studded cast Tyler Perry has turned marriage into something meaningful again. 4 couples take a vacation to refresh their marriage and rediscover the real reason of why did they get married. Secrets will be reviled and truths will be told. This movie will make you happy, sad, anger, and fall in love. Tyler Perry did a great job with showing how beautiful the snowy mountain of Colorado aka Canada, really are. I am not one to love know being a Detroit native myself, however Tyler allowed mother nature to show off her own beauty as he captured breath taking scenes such as Sheila driving to meet her husband and friends. And also when she was on the mountain side. Tyler also gave warmth in the cabin scenes. Lighting in this movie gave you the comfort of being in a cabin. Terry played by Tyler Perry plays a husband who just wants to spend time with his wife Diane played by Sharon Leal. Diane just wants to get some work done and feels that her husband should understand that. Angela played by Tasha Smith is a wife who feels she cannot quite trust her husband and totally over reacts when she feels he is cheating. Marcus played by Michael Jai White is in love with his wife Angela but feels she may be quite a bit much to handle. Gavin played by Malik Yoba is a husband who wants to better connect with his wife after a terrible death hit them both. Patricia played by Janet Jackson is a well-known psychologist and writer, who created these trips for her and her friends to be able to ask that question. Why did I get married? She finds herself asking the same question with her husband Gavin. Shelia played by Jill Scott is a beautiful plus size woman who just wants to spend time with her husband Mike played by Richard T. Jones. Mike has other plans when he decides that Sheila's friend Trina should stay on the plane with him and allow his wife to drive, after being told that she is too big to have only one seat on the plane. After driving all the way to Colorado Shelia meets a handsome sheriff, who allows her to wait until the next day to be able to get to the cabin with her friend. Due to falling trees. The ending is explosive.

Jones (Mike) and Lamon Rucker (Troy) The theme to this movie is about Social Issues involving Love, Marriage, Overcoming and Forgiveness. These 4 married couples who are best friends from college, go on a marriage retreat every year to help strengthen their marriages, discuss their issues and figure out "Why did they get married". Patricia, who is the Psychologists in the group, helps them work through issues in their marriages, but this time her marriage is in more trouble than the others are aware of. Everyone thinks that Patricia and Gavin have the perfect marriage. Patricia and Gavin play their parts to a tee when they are having a serious and emotional moment in the kitchen after returning from the retreat early. The film, "The Best Man" has the same appropriateness as does this movie. It is about social issues of relationships, forgiveness and overcoming as well. One technique that I will choose is the lighting. Throughout the movie the lighting was what I call calm. There were not a light of bright vibrant colors and spot lighting. I do feel that this motif was intentional in order to convey the seriousness of the subject matter. There were some light-hearted moments in dialogue to break up the monotony a little though. But for the most part the lighting was very low light and the focus was on the situations that these couple were facing. The second technique that I will choose is the sound/music. The music helped to set the tone for what was about to happen, and to transition into the next sequence of scenes. It was also utilized to set the mood and the tone of the movie. It almost enabled you to feel the struggles and unfortunate situations happening in the couples lives. It also helped you to feel the love between them as well as the pain. The acting in this film along with the dialog was essential to getting the story-line and the mood across and to engage the viewer in the life circumstances of each couple. The story-line in this film was excellent and all too real life. The lessons learned could be helpful to struggling marriages who are having a difficult time figuring out "Why they got married"!
