an ambitious but ultimately ineffective debut endeavor.
View MoreGreat example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.
View MoreIt’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
View More.Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.
View MoreThis film tells the story of an aspiring DJ who plays for the first time in a major festival.I love EDM to bits, and I have been looking forward to this film for a long time. The music is great, and the festival looks like what I imagine it to be. However, the story spends too much time meandering the back story before the festival. The characters are not that interesting either. I was quite bored in the first half, but the film did get better when the electronic music kicks in.
View MoreThe movie is an exaggeration. The music can be too loud compared with the voices. That might capture the environment, but for me it was a constant pain to turn the volume up and down. At a certain point I gave up.The camera is moving too much. Maybe the team attempted something moody. I have no idea. It ends up with the perspective of a friendly Indian who has had way too much coffee. The dialogue is forced. And the characters are stereotype. And the writer seems very happy with that as the audience has to infer the back history mostly from the stereotype. The interaction with the phone is part of the action. Yet the way it appears on screen is ugly. And both phone and SMS on screen are not new, so there is no excuse for the ugly blobs popping up on screen usually for obvious information. The actors are cute. But the acting is not good.In short, a movie that can be seen without sound and I doubt it will miss anything.Contact me with Questions, Comments or Suggestions ryitfork @ bitmail.ch
View MoreThe 2 stars are for the cinematography which was beautiful, and that's literally ALL this movie has going for it. The plot is like something a first year film student would write, nothing special whatsoever, like a cop-out on the Hero's Journey only skipping half of the steps. The "creator" of the XOXO music festival comes off as creepy and like he's going to roofie the poor girl from Modern Family who needs to charge her cell phone. Then later, when his character is switched to act like a Mentor it just feels forced. You could have had the greatest direction and actors ever but the script is SO poorly written that it just couldn't be saved. Someone needs to do an EDM movie that is actually good, funny, beautiful, and get's the point! I know what XOXO was going for, but it didn't get there, and it was never going to from the start. It's really unfortunate that so much was wasted on this concept.
View MoreI liked the movie. The characters and story weren't really that interesting since we don't delve into them that much. What I found compelling was the themes that the characters embodied. Themes that connect to my generation. Krystal and Ethan are the idealistic youth, Ethan is trying to make his dreams come true and Krystal is pursuing fairy tale romance/love. They both think it will all fall in place at XOXO. Ray and Shannie are young adults about to start their careers while Ray is finishing his 5 year program Shannie is moving away for work. So they attend XOXO to escape a harsh reality. Tariq is trying to pursue a career he is passionate about while at the same time trying to please his dad and make him proud. There is also a culture clash Tariq's father doesn't really understand Tariq's decision but he is not portrayed as bad guy he just wants his son to be okay in life but Tariq wants to do what he loves. As a person coming from an immigrant family I can understand that. We have older generation interacting with the younger. Neil is an older DJ who looks down on the newer generation (Millennial bashing), DJ Avilo who preys on the younger generation in order to stay on top and Anders is the one who embraces the new generation and helps to cultivate them.
