Self-important, over-dramatic, uninspired.
It's a mild crowd pleaser for people who are exhausted by blockbusters.
View MoreEach character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.
View MoreIt really made me laugh, but for some moments I was tearing up because I could relate so much.
View MoreI just finished binge watching this show after years of meaning to. I've never been a fan of Westerns, though I can no longer claim that. Since I'm a Fear the Walking Dead fan, and two of the actors from that are in Deadwood, I figured this was probably a good time to watch it.I LOVED this show! It was so well-made I felt I could actually feel what it must've been like living in those times. Not only were the sets incredible and the costumes out of this world, but the lighting through the whole thing made me keenly aware throughout the entire thing, that they did NOT have electricity. Now, as far as the acting...Robin Weigert as Calamity Jane was probably the single most entertaining performance in a show I've ever experienced. Hilarious, pitiful, brilliant...for me the show would've been good without her, but it wouldn't have been par excellence. What a chameleon that actress is! All the other actors were good, too, and believable in their roles. Tricky giving Garret Dillahunt two separate rolls, possibly thinking no one would notice, but I did right away. I almost thought it was three roles, since Jeff Cahill, who played Crop Ear, looks very similar to Dillahunt. So hoping there really is going to be a movie!
View MoreDeadwood is my favorite television drama of all time. I can't think of another show with such depth, complexity and humanity. Throughout its original run I was consistently surprised and impressed. I return to the series every few years, and my fondness for it just grows. Every performance on this show is a revelation. It has the most consistently talented ensemble cast I've ever seen. My only regret is that it was cancelled before it came to a proper resolution.
View MoreI watched the first season on HBO. It was a test of endurance. This series has about as much relationship to the real old West as a fish has to a bicycle -too many uncooth crudities to list, as if there weren't decent people with decent values who also lived in the West. Foul-mouthed beyond reason in even ordinary conversation, purely for its degenerate and vile shock value. Milch deserves an 'F' for his use of language. Not everyone needs its vile shock value to get a thrill out of life. Zero stars.
View MoreI would have to agree 100% with most of the negative reviews. I finally got around to watching Season One of Deadwood, and immediately found the silly, juvenile, and anachronistic overuse of profanity so off-putting that I couldn't watch any further than the first episode. Never mind that some reviewers say it cleans up and improves in later episodes. Why invest any more of my time hoping this happens? The foul language hardly makes the show seem "realistic" and "gritty" any more than using a lot of big words makes someone sound smart. For superb, smart, and realistic dialog in a western-themed show, I would recommend AMC's "Hell On Wheels." You will want to binge- watch all five seasons in one sitting. I came close.
