It’s an especially fun movie from a director and cast who are clearly having a good time allowing themselves to let loose.
View MoreThrough painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
View MoreThis movie tries so hard to be funny, yet it falls flat every time. Just another example of recycled ideas repackaged with women in an attempt to appeal to a certain audience.
View MoreThere is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
View MoreI remember this being far more intelligent when I was about thirteen...It hasn't weathered the rigors of time very well. Most of the scientific concepts in this series were flawed when the show first came out. An explosion that would slowly hurl the moon out of orbit without killing most of the occupants of the moon base is a good start. The occupants of the moon-base being crushed by g-forces while a pilot above the same moon and accelerating just as fast is non-plussed... and the worst: The moon, which is pretty much unsteerable, is headed for a mystery planet? You'd have a better chance of flying into the butt of a giant unicorn...One the other hand, Baine and Landau are terrific actors. So, as they read these lines that make even those of us with a spattering of education in the sciences wince, they are doing it quite well. I'm of two minds with this one...
View MoreAlthough I was over 30 years old when this was released to TV I somehow managed to miss it; it was a very pleasant discovery that I found recently on You Tube. I was astounded to see how superior it was in every respect to the original Star Trek series that I was familiar with. I never warmed to Star Trek because I hated William Shatner's rotten acting, the stupid overworked ideas like the Vulcan thing and the cheap, phony sets. But Space 1999 is real class; its stories, sets, acting and special effects are just swell. But then we can always count on anything that the BBC has a hand in making as being superior to anything similar attempted by any other network on earth (PBS excluded). Nice surprise; thanks You Tube.
View More"Space: 1999" could best be described as a British version of "Star Trek." It was comparable to "Star Trek" in that it featured a crew which visited different worlds each week and experienced various adventures along the way. However, it differed from "Star Trek" in terms of premise. In "Star Trek," the crew traveled to different worlds in a ship which traveled faster than the speed of light because of warp drive. In "Space: 1999," the crew of Moonbase Alpha traveled to different star systems as a consequence of the moon having been blasted out of Earth orbit because of an accidental explosion."Space: 1999" was easily one of the most visually impressive science fiction series from the 1970's. The special effects were far above average by 1970's standards. The sets and costumes were among the best to be featured in a science fiction series. Overall, the series' visuals appeared to have been inspired by the movie, "2001: A Space Odyssey," which had been released only a few years prior to the launch of this series. One of the show's frequent shortcomings was its weak science. For example, the explosion in the first episode explained the moon's departure from Earth orbit; but in some respects, the series never fully explained how the moon and Moonbase Alpha were able to reach other star systems within short time periods without exceeding the speed of light. In another example, Maya's shape-shifting abilities introduced a number of science and logic issues. Weak science was common in 1970's science fiction television shows. The show underwent a few changes between seasons one and two. The show's atmosphere in season one was often much darker compared to that of season two. The costumes and sets were also slightly different between the two seasons. In some regards, the show's execution seemed to be stronger in season one than in season two.Overall, "Space: 1999" was an enjoyable series to watch. Although the show's science might not have always withstood close scrutiny, the show was still filled with memorable moments and unforgettable imagery. When the show's science failed, style generally triumphed over substance. "Space: 1999" was a fun and atmospheric science fiction series.
View MoreAs a kid, I remember watching "Space: 1999". I didn't understand all the details of the plot, but enjoyed the science fiction. Watching it as an adult, I enjoy the campy special effects of the show, like bell-bottom space outfits and platform shoes...genius! Also, the layout of the moon-base was very angular and based on primary colors with lots of white. It was very clean, simple and modern. It was typical of the designs of the 1970's. So, if you want a show that will allow you to escape, this is it. The first season seems very atmospheric, in the sense that there was more dialogue than action. Also, there were scenes where nothing happened: people simply looked at each other, and there were background noises. The second season was more action-oriented. The stories were more fantastic, as opposed to the philosophical questions raised in the episodes of the first season.
