This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.

Great movie. Not sure what people expected but I found it highly entertaining.

The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.

When people talk about great animated series based on comic books, there's always some guy wearing a stained Iron Maiden t-shirt who brings up Spawn. But Spawn isn't even based on a good comic book. Spawn is a joke. A symbol of everything that's wrong about 90s pop culture. Everything about Spawn is is stupid. The comic book is badly written trash, the live action movie is worse than ingrown toenails...he's just a combination of Spider-Man, Batman and Venom with a more satanic version of The Prowler's costume. The chains and parts of his origin are stolen from Ghost Rider, and his worst enemy is a Clown. How original. The series is everything the comic book was, but worse. It's even darker. Pornographic sex and violence, profanity and some really sick stuff I don't even want to mention. They should have called it "Try Hard: The Animated Series". The show tries so hard to be adult, it's almost cute. Like watching eight year old boys trying to impress their big brothers.I think it's sad that a bunch of underpaid animators had to suffer carpal tunnel syndrome drawing cels for this garbage. That the voice actors got sore throats from all the growling. What a waste of talent...why can't people just make meaningful stuff instead of nihilistic trash like this? Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is a much better choice you want a good animated movie for adults.Spawn doesn't deserve a new animated series, or the new movie Todd McFarlane has talked about ever since man invented the wheel. Spawn can go back to hell and stay there.(Zero stars)

During the year when the live-action adaptation of, "Spawn", was released, HBO released an animated series based on the comic-book series that ran from 1997 to 1999. This is one of the greatest animated series ever made. The animation is excellent it make's the series look dark and edgy, the characters were great including Detectives Sam and Twitch, and the voice acting was good especially having Keith David provide the voice of the main character.Overall, if you didn't like the live-action movie or looking for a good show to watch, "Spawn: The Animated Series", is really worth watching.

I agree with what many reviewers said and I wont rehash the story line anymore - many folks have done so already. What I'd like to add is that HBO Cable Networks did a wonderful thing in showing this as a weekly series. I was glued to the television weekly at midnight - not just me but all of my friends as well. I don't care what I was doing, I HAD to watch this. We all loved this animated working of Spawn. The animation was crisp, the storytelling was adult and intelligent, the vocal casting was superb. This is what adult animation and comic book adaptation was about. The first season was better than the second one to me but both were groundbreaking. What I disliked more than anything -- was the feature film of "Spawn". It did not hold a candle to this series and just ruined what was already done. Sad thing, HBO hasn't re-shown repeats of this and they should. And HBO hasn't produced & adapted other comics, which it should be doing along these lines. There are many production lessons here as well as a great adaptation lesson. Todd MacFarlane's creation is the best here. I hope they show it again, release a DVD if so, do not miss this. Be forewarned - adult themes run through this version. The first season is NOT for the kiddies or a PG-13 oriented. It is dark, it is wonderful and it is the world of Spawn as it should be seen and interpreted.

Am I the only one that thinks Todd McFarlane plagiarized spawn from the Ghost Rider comics? Todd did work for Marvel comics when he started out, although spawn is not quite the same as ghost rider, it still looks like he got all his ideas from that comic while he brought it back to life when he was working for Marvel, or maybe not many from my generation read the ghost rider comic. The spawn series does start out great for a while then starts dragging in later episodes. Spawn the movie is OK, McFarlane might be good at making comics but not good at making movies, the old spawn games are worth playing if you haven't played any of them.
