I wanted to but couldn't!
I wanted to like it more than I actually did... But much of the humor totally escaped me and I walked out only mildly impressed.
View MoreThe movie is wonderful and true, an act of love in all its contradictions and complexity
View MoreAll of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
View MoreJust in the process of watching this having recorded the series from the BBC ages ago.I am on episode 15 so far.If you are OK with subtitles then give this a go and see what you think.Everything about this shouts quality: characterization; acting; plot; and, production. The only thing that I would say is that its a big commitment of time to watch this but I think that the commitment of the director, actors and the crew has certainly been worth mine. It is a stunning piece of television and I think that the day by day unfolding of the action is something that only TV can do.
View MoreI am not into crime series at all but knowing that the Danes sometimes do work little wonders with a TV Series I gave this one a shot and watched all episodes in 2 days when I had to lay down after a third molar surgery at the dentist. It was more than 15 hours and not a single one was spent in boredom.A very complex plot with lots of interesting sub plots, a view into Copenhagen's city hall intrigues and very convincing acting of the main characters (Lund, Meyer, Theiss, Pernille, Hartmann) made it a joy to watch.I wonder where this small country takes all the great actors from! They sure don t always look as perfect as all the actors, we know from US movies and TV series, but therefore seem the more authentic and likable (and less 'over optimized').On the downside: especially the end did not meet all my expectations. Many, many questions remain unanswered. The end does not cast a clarifying light on the story as a whole, so you could say "Oh, now it all makes sense" or "Oh yes, I knew it was him all along" or so. The killer is revealed not before the last 90 min without anything making him a suspect before.Rather it turns out, everything before was misleading for the viewer. The really bad thing is, the revelation of the real killer does not seem to be consistent with every detail we learned about along all the episodes, some do even conflict. This leaves somewhat of a bad aftertaste. But after all a really great series to watch.
View MoreI decided to watch the Danish crime series "The Killing" on Netflix given its good score and reviews here. I don't tend to do a lot of reviews and what I write here is mostly out of frustration but I shall try to be fair all the same...With 20 episodes nearly an hour in length it takes some time to find out "whodunnit" and the series is certainly gritty and gripping right from the off. The acting is mostly excellent and strong enough not to let subtitles put you off with characters often having a "knowing more than they let on" feel about them.Tenacious DCI Sarah Lund discovers "the killing" amid her plans to move to Sweden with her sweetheart and proceeds to investigate and interrogate what seems like half of Copenhagen with her more hot-headed impulsive successor DCI Jan Meyer.I found myself being sucked in as suspects appear thick and fast with suspicion shifting switcheroos in each episode. Despite the fact that you get wise to the red herrings after a few episodes there is enough tension, grit and suspended disbelief to keep the viewer gripped. Also fishy is a parallel thread involving underhanded political shenanigans at the City Hall and an upcoming mayoral election that just might be related. After several episodes I started to worry that the finale would be able to tie up the various sub-plots, insinuations and convenient coincidences that I was challenged with remembering. You have to see these things through don't you? Then the "whodunnit" was revealed and was kindly considerate enough to explain how, where and why theydunnit to another character and this head-scratching reviewer. Struggling to recollect all the chaff from the previous episodes I was left bewildered, confounded and pretty unsatisfied. What about this? What about that? That seemed like a strange reaction...Ultimately (and unfortunately) great acting and atmosphere only just saves this Danish show's bacon from being murdered by excessive plot twists, unlikely evidence and flawed character behaviour. Worth a watch if you have the time and patience.
View MoreIf you enjoy tense crime thrillers then this is perfect for you. I was given this as a Christmas present a couple of years ago by my aunt and told it was a must-see. Little did I know that I'd be hooked! We started watching the first episode and ended up watching 5 in one night. I have an annoying tendency to ask questions through films and TV series but I didn't utter a word! The style of acting & the flow of the filming, it's just flawless. The Danish just make series SO well! Sarah Lund as a character is unforgettable, one of the greatest I believe. She is unlikeable in some ways, very closed and awkward but you can't help but love her. Because of The Killing and it's epicness, it has created a love of Danish dramas in me. I moved on to The Bridge, Those Who Kill and Borgen and although absolutely spectacular, didn't come close to The Killing. If you have quite a few hours a night spare or you have good will power to stop watching after one episode, then have a watch! You definitely won't be disappointed!
