Sorry, this movie sucks
It is both painfully honest and laugh-out-loud funny at the same time.
View MoreThe movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
View MoreThere are moments that feel comical, some horrific, and some downright inspiring but the tonal shifts hardly matter as the end results come to a film that's perfect for this time.
View MoreThis series is such a mess in more ways than one. LMFAO!Music - Laughable! OMG! It's SO bad I couldn't stop cracking up at how cheesy it was. The intro music is super lame and there are times when the soundtrack sounds like the theme song to Night Court. The worst of all is a song they use in episode 14 that has a chorus that goes " Bruce Lee.. Bruce Lee.. Bruce Lee..". Seriously, you will die laughing. I've never heard a worse soundtrack ever. Who the hell signed off on this? LOL!Time Period - they obviously took zero consideration into what year it was. Costa Pizza boxes, Justin Timberlake t-shirt.. it's hilarious. Oh and not to sound racist but I'm pretty sure there weren't any black female police officers in 1959. Inaccuracy - I could write a list here of all the horribly inaccuracies of this film but it would take too long. There's one reviewer in the first 10 reviews who nails them all. Go read that. However, one truly ridiculous inaccuracy that has nothing to do with Bruce's story is the fact that the black female police officers are wearing patches on their uniforms that says "Police Academy". LOL! A murder investigation performed by cadets? It's as if the wardrobe director went to Goodwill and got a couple of used shirts. Hilarious! Also, did anyone notice how when they arrested him they never put him in handcuffs? You're arresting a guy as a murder suspect with no cuffs? WTF? LOL!At times the film speaks like a Chinese propaganda film. It's whole purpose is prove the Chinese people are superior to Japanese people. I'm fully convinced that Asians are the most racist people on earth. Give it a rest already. The only thing that's good about this film is the lead actor. He looks a lot like Bruce and does a good job portraying him. The guy who plays Master IP is pretty cool too, although he really didn't look like that. he was bald and clean shaven. But I guess making him look like the dude from KiIl Bill is just sexier. Again.. gotta love the comedic value. Sorry but "Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story" was way better. This comedic joke, "The legend of Bruce Lee" took 50 dragged-out episodes to tell the same story, an inaccurately at that. Don't waste your time. Final note: Shannon Lee... are you serious? You actually put your name on this garbage? Don't you think your dad would be a little upset? Kind of disrespectful to his legend.. the real one.
View More1. Totally Racist!2. With the exception of a few actors marginal performance, the vast majority of the supporting cast was outright horrendous!3. Xenophobic propaganda not befitting the Chinese people and more like that of a Cold War propaganda film than a tribute to one of the Greatest Most Beloved and Respected Chinese American figures of all time that should have been used as the opportunity as it was to bring both races together4. The Direction, Director of Photography and Writers depict the talent of a High School project than actual professionals (I can't believe Netflix was this desperate to actually pay to broadcast this)5. The Location and Set Directors were so pathetic and this was shot as such a low budget project that any possibility of believing this was a period film ranging in the 1960-1970's when you have 2000+ model year cars driving down the freeway, stock footage using NYPD 2006 police cars in footage meant to be Seattle. The worst Seattle Police Bureau officers and uniforms with "Security Officer" badges and patches, Signage technology that didn't even exist until the mid 1990's6. Wardrobe was pathetic...embarrassing 7. Totally inaccurate depiction of Chinese culture, Chinese/Hong Kong Police, laws and procedures8. Totally inaccurate depiction of American culture, Police, Constitutional, State and Federal laws and procedures. As messed up as the legal system in America might be right now, there is a system. The Seattle Police remind me more of a Nigerian village police (including that actors themselves) than any law enforcement agency I've seen in the US.9. Ip Man is coming back from his grave to get you for the horrifically poor depiction of him.10. Bruce Lee was in no way a perfect human, but what he accomplished in America, for China and it's people, the art of Kung Fu (Wing Chun in particular) and martial arts as a whole deserved this story to be more accurate, more respectful of who Bruce Lee really was, his mannerisms, his family, friends and foes. This version is more fiction than reality.11. The Stunts and Fight Choreography and skill set of the martial artists and actors skills were nothing short of pathetic. The fact that this series got more than 1 Star rating is more about the Love of Bruce Lee and how hungry the world is to still watch anything with his name on it 40 years after his early passing.I have not been this disappointed and saddened by a series that got is so wrong ever.
View MoreIt's not as inspiring and action packed as Dragon the Bruce Lee Story, but Danny Chan is a spitting resemblance of Bruce Lee, including his mannerisms and how he fights is pretty close to being spot on. The start of each episode was annoying with the intro music. It felt like a cheap karaoke soundtrack and some karaoke singer was just singing along to it. Quite off putting. Also the movie did not cover the sub story of each sibling, his mum and dad (it would have helped with the influences they would have had on Bruce growing up). There were far too much focus on his high school sweetheart. Their love story was very bland and uninteresting (I felt she was just as bland and uninteresting too). The interaction between his classmates were quite poor. The character development between his classmates and the teachers with Bruce did not transition well. The depiction of the timeline when it was shot seemed inaccurate. He was brought up during the 60s and 70s, but detail like what the boxers wore at his school (they were wearing modern baggy basketball shorts and singlet) were not a reflection of this era. Generally I'm not sure if the series was accurate or made up. And shouldn't Bruce Lee and his family and the characters in Hong Kong spoke Cantonese not Mandarin? Also with the Netflix version why couldn't the white people both in Hong Kong and USA speak English! The English parts looked dubbed over. It looked unnatural that the African Americans, the English and the Americans spoke Mandarin and not English! It would have been better if Bruce having arrived in the US for the first time would attempt to speak English but only to be ridiculed and tricked my westerners. This would definitely highlight the challenges he had with racism and adapting to a new culture. His effort to integrate especially with understanding and speaking English, would have been more interesting, and we would have felt closer to the Bruce's character and felt more sympathetic to the challenges he faced. It is a poor follow up to the Bruce Lee story. Uninspiring, long, uninformative and almost unentertaining.Having been a Bruce Lee fan since I was a teenager, I feel disappointed at this attempt on portraying his life. I hope there is a better spin off for his story in the future (the same way Wong Fei Hung and Ip Man had been tremendous). It is a small budget series, but that shouldn't be an excuse for a poorly made series.I would not recommend at all for any Lee fans, martial art fans or anybody else for that matter.
View MoreHaving watched all 50 episodes, I have to say I did enjoy this series, albeit being draggy and boring at times. What I do find interesting is how they took artistic license to change anything at will, here are a few examples of how they busted their own agenda or didn't catch the faux pas at editing: 1. Master Ip - in reality, he was clean shaven, but of course they had to give him a long white beard to make him look venerable. Ironic since part of Bruce's frustration with Hollywood was their stigmatized view of Chinese as being "pigtail wearing" , but yet the series goes to great length promoting this stereotype. 2. Too many examples of the time being out of context with late 1960's early 70's. a. Airport in Hong Kong is Chep Lap Kok, not the older Kai Tak. b. Scenes in Seattle with the restaurant Chipotle behind them. c. Countless other scenes. 3. Episode 47 where a Cathy Pacific jet is landing, but the name is shown backwards on the jet due to the camera not shooting a direct shot (cificaP yhtaC).I also wonder why they changed his name from Lee Jun Fan to Lee Xiao Long, along with other name changes throughout his lifetime, like Jame Colburn became Douglas?I endured the series because I adore Bruce Lee, but would like to know why they were so sloppy with these errors and also the radial changes to people's identities.
