The best films of this genre always show a path and provide a takeaway for being a better person.

A hidden gem, fast moving, good acting and convincing sets. The good guys in this are all really likeable and the villains have scarcely any redeeming qualities. Deals with some very dark themes and key characters are never far from danger. Ian McShane is cast in another great role.

I am not a history-fan, not even when it's about movies/ TV series. However, - as many of you previously said - you should really watch this series once. MAybe i decided to watch because i have plenty of time to kill these days, maybe not. But a good decision, definitely. Many times for me it was so unbelievable to see how the thirst for power can lead people, and opposite to this, how much sacrifice others are able to do.. The human nature is so amazing! Despite all the fights, the hatred, the folks didn't give up..So, I would recommend this series not only for those who are fond of historical movies/series, but also for those who are somewhat interested in human psychology. ..Besides this, Eddie Redmayne is great and cute as always! :)A bit off-topic, but such a big surprise it was seeing plenty of Hungarian names appearing in the cast.. I didn't know about it, so just checked the filming locations to be sure.

That is what me and my significant other call this exhausting tripe of a show. Its only redeeming quality is the music - the wonderful Gregorian chants have really been the high point of several episodes. Other than that, it's just gratuitous nudity, unnecessary violence, incest that apparently wasn't in the book, and uneven progression of the story. Bishop Waleran was the most enjoyable character, mostly for being so ambitious and uncompromising, albeit very flat and predictable. All in all, for a show set in the Middle Ages, it felt like watching a soap about a hippie commune in the 21st century - not what I expected or wanted to see.

First let me say that my review has nothing to do with the cast. Follet's novel is indeed epic with rich character & scene development that is nearly impossible to fully translate on screen. I'm an avid reader & movie lover so I completely understand if certain story lines may not translate on screen, or a superfluous scene is written as a means to arrive at the same conclusion etc. However, too many liberties were taking with the storyline to the point that I starting referencing my e-book...I never do that sort of stuff! King Stephen's delusions and obsession with Jack. Jack showing up in scenes where he didn't belong & his surprising resurrection irritated me the most. Also the storyline with Empress Maude, Robert of Gloucester & ransom/child issue was unnecessary. My critique may be too harsh and imperceptible to a viewer that hasn't read the book.
