Wonderful character development!

There are moments in this movie where the great movie it could've been peek out... They're fleeting, here, but they're worth savoring, and they happen often enough to make it worth your while.

I had previously watched two seasons of the original story, "The Bridge", and found it to be excellent, if slightly depressing, viewing. In particular, I was impressed with the consistently good writing, especially for Saga (Sofia Helin) and her portrayal of a high-functioning detective with Asperger's Syndrome. I watched the first season of "The Tunnel" and found that, as mentioned in other reviews, it was a near scene-for-scene re-make of "The Bridge". As a result, it was saddled with the burden of being compared to the original by those who had seen the original. There were deviations from the original story and many were poor choices. The choice to make the British male detective (Stephen Dillane) a much stronger character and to move the French female detective (Clémence Poésy) a little into the background was not a good decision. It made her role less important and weakened the story in so doing. They also chose to modify scenes at the end and to introduce a somewhat overwrought, out-of-character finale. Even with the changes made to the story, it could have been better. However, the writing for tClémence Poésy was uneven and quite often clearly out of character. They made her far more sensitive than Saga had ever been (Saga wasn't uncaring, she just didn't notice most of the time.). This inconsistency weakened her impact and Clémence Poésy's performance could not make up for the poor writing choices. I would have liked to like it better. There were some fine actors and it is a good story. But the shortcomings in the screenplay and dialogue prevented me from doing so.

1st season is a reboot of the famous Bron series. And of course it can't be better. But it is OK. Since it is European show, it is not total crap like most american shows. The British detective's character is great, French detective is a little weak, but since they copied Bron, I understand why they had to do it, it is not easy to play a character that has already been played so good.Season two is great! I really liked it. Original, interesting. But the season 3 is completly dull. First of all, I can't understand why they always have to mix in people of ex-Yugoslavia??? Don't the Brits and French have any other things but they always resort to the conflict in ex-Yugoslavia? I mean, there is a lot of material for Brits all over the world where their "empire" brought peace and justice, they could have filmed something about India. And French too, several places come to mind; why don't the peace loving and developed French film something with Algeria?And then who checks facts for these series? C'mon! There is no name "Saban" in ANY ex-Yugoslavia country. It could be Shaban, but definitely not "Saban". Khasanovic? Note the "kh" which is never used in slavic lanugages. If it is "Kasanovic" then it can't have "KH". And has "ch" at the end. And what population does this represent??? Muslim? Serb? Croat? His father should be Marko, which is TYPICAL Serbian name, and no Serb in his right mind would EVER name his child Saban, because it is considered a red-neck name in ex-Yugoslavia. When you want to tell that somebody is a paesant you call him "Saban". I can't see Croats having this name as well. So it must be a muslim. Now, there are NO muslims in Bosnia named Marko, so his father must have been a Serb. And give his son a muslim name????Also when French detective hears the lullaby, she investigates which language it is. THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL she could have come up with "bosnian". First of all, there IS NO bosnian language, only Serbo-Croat language. Second, these 2 "languages" are only different in few words and dialect. And only SOME words differ. And there are NO such words in the lullaby!!! So there is no way she could have guessed the lullaby is Serbian, Croat, Montenegrin or Bosnian!!!! If you had to take an educated guess, you would have to go with Serbian, since Serbs are the biggest nation in Ex Yugoslavia, no way you would have come up with Bosnian (even if that language existed).All in all, a load of c**p.

I'd never heard of this show or "The Bridge" (the show upon which "The Tunnel" is based). Amazon Prime had the first season of "The Tunnel" so I watched it. I liked it and then found some online source for seasons 2 and 3. I liked them but found something "off"/just not quite right. Then I read reviews that talked about "The Bridge", and it was the general consensus that "The Bridge" was better. I found "The Bridge" on Hulu and just finished watching season 1. In the process, I realized what was "off" about "The Tunnel" -- it was Laura's character. I always got the sense that her character was put in just to provide a "pc"/interracial perspective. But after watching "The Bridge" it's more than that. The actress who plays Laura has no sense of subtlety whatsoever. (Another reviewer said the same thing.) She is way too over the top on everything and it's distracting. The way the main cop's wife (Mette) is portrayed in "The Bridge" is much more realistic. Both female leads did a great job portraying an autistic investigator, so it's a draw in that regard between the two shows. The male lead in "The Bridge" seems to me to be more "real" (i.e. less "pretty" and slick) than in "The Tunnel". And while the two shows are very similar in content, I agree that the original "The Bridge" is the better of the two. This isn't a bad show, and it's worth a watch. But between the two shows, I prefer "The Bridge" to "The Tunnel".

It is, unfortunately, the usual progression of TV series: S01... Great, S02... good but not great S03... not good S04+...why did they bother (oh! it's the money)S03 of "The Tunnel" breaks that mold. It really is the best of all three seasons. Her and him are their usual perfectly cast selves. The plot and the script are gripping. Small touches, like the French detective swearing in front of a British detective and saying "Pardon my French!" There are current political comments scattered through the episode, but nothing offensive, everyone is entitled to their opinion! (new concept)A small carafe of Red and some snacks and watch all six episodes, I did! It is real page turning that, one cannot put down. Try it..you will not be disappointed.If "The Tunnel" and "Babylon Berlin" are not nominated for awards it will be definite proof that the Awards are rigged, to the highest bidder.Well done to all involved in this series, thank you.
