I'd first heard of George Blagdon from Vikings, another great show. He is in my opinion one of the best actors doing the rounds at the moment for this kind of show and he plays so convincingly the complicated character of Louis XIV with such skill. I've visited le chateau de Versailles, it is a spectacular building and gardens, also where the film Man In The Iron Mask was set, which I also loved. There may be some historical inaccuracies in the show, as there are in all these kinds of show, but with the wonderful cinematography, costumes and overall good acting, it gives a fascinating insight into the Court of Louis XIV and I hope the show inspires more people to learn about history. The fist couple of episodes can be a bit slow in places as it sets the scenario for the plot and characters, but hang in there, you'll soon be clicking the button to watch just one more show.

I think if history were taught with all of the sexual intrigue left in, more of us would pay attention to it. I loved the plotting of this series (I have only seen the first season). I'm sure there are others on here who can tell you what the inaccuracies are, but I'm not too unhappy about the "sexed up" details. Louis XIV had a big old vision for France, and it is satisfying to watch him craft his legacy as a person who thinks he was chosen by God to do it. HA! Who does he think he is, God's gift to man? YES! And to woman! I looked up the number of children this dude fathered from over twenty women and thought--wow--the series may have actually underplayed his affairs. Very fun to watch. It is not ashamed of its decadence. Just go with it!

Truly worth the watch from beginning to end. Looking forward to season two......Music was well done especially the theme song "Générique"Display of 16 Century France was interesting and encourage me to research the Sun King, Louis XIV.It was not over bogged down with religion but I believe it was indeed a destroyer of France and very prevalent like all other countries in this time.Wondering if season 2 will address King Louis XIV war tendencies. The money to build Versailles came from somewhere.....

Few examples of scandalous inventions by the script writers of this series. In the first episode very religious queen Maria Theresa of Spain gives birth to a black child (!) - of course that never really happened. When she died king "Louis remarked that she had never caused him unease on any other occasion" (Wikipedia). The king (Louis XIV) is having a passionate sexual relationship with his brother's wife (history tells us slightly different story). The actress Lizzie Brocheré is a young girl (in the series maybe 20 years old) that wants to be a doctor and helps her father deliver the queen's child (absolutely impossible for a woman to be a doctor around 1660). In another scene a court woman says to another: "Nice perfume", the other replies: "I never use one". Versailles didn't have a single bathroom in those days which was the main reason why perfumes were invented! Strange but true. So such conversation was highly improbable... All this (and more) happens just in the 1st episode! Script writers of a historical serial should know better! Unwatchable!
