Good concept, poorly executed.

I gave this film a 9 out of 10, because it was exactly what I expected it to be.

The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.

This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.

Anne Shirley (Megan Follows) is a precocious overly-dramatic talkative 13 year old orphan forever struggling under servitude of others. She loves books. Elderly brother and sister, Marilla (Colleen Dewhurst) and kindly Matthew Cuthbert (Richard Farnsworth), want a young boy to help the farm. They are surprised to find Anne Shirley waiting at the train station. Eventually Marilla relents to let her stay. She befriends Diana Barry and has a combative relationship with Gilbert Blythe. This is a great TV mini-series. The first hour has the trio of Follows, Dewhurst and Farnsworth. Farnsworth is almost silent but has such a great presence. Dewhurst is absolutely brilliant and Follows creates the new standard for Anne Shirley. Then Anne has a new trio with Diana and Gilbert. It's a series of fun hap-hazard teen misadventures and a sweet coming-of-age story.

I simply love this movie. I first saw it with my mother when I was about 8 or 9, and we both fell in love. Kevin Sullivan takes such care into recreating Avonlea. He's created a whole majestic universe, and you feel like you are a member. When a character has done something good and people in the movie applaud, you feel like applauding with them. I have resisted many times the urge to cry, laugh, and cheer while watching this movie. The actors are fantastic. Megan Follows is brilliant, and she really embodies what Anne is all about. Jonathan Crombie as Gilbert is also amazing. I can watch this movie over and over again. I also like that it stays very true to the novel, with little differences here and there to make it more dramatic and make it flow easily, but it doesn't feel butchered. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone.

I just recently watched this movie again and all I have to say is this is an amazing movie. I remember watching it on TV when I was younger and I feel in love right then and there! Megan Follows is a very, very convincing Anne. Now when I read the books I picture her. I watch this movie at least once every three or four months just to be inspired. It's heart warming and a wonderful movie for children and adults alike. This movie makes you feel like you're there with her experiencing everything with her and growing up along side of her. The locations are breathtaking. The acting is wonderful. The theme is timeless. The movie all in all is fabulous. I never get tired of watching it.

Anne of Green Gables is a movie that holds a special place in my heart. I first saw this with my mother years ago, and it quickly became our favorite movie. We must have watched it every time we were together. And no matter how many times we watched it, every viewing always seemed like the first time all over again. We laughed and cried at all the same places, and couldn't wait until the day when Gilbert and Anne would finally be together. My mother developed cancer and suffered for two years. This movie was a wonderful escape for her and myself. I lost her 4 months ago, and at first I thought I would never be able to watch this movie ever again, but I was wrong. It only means that much more to me now. For now it holds even more wonderful memories. This is a movie that is meant to be shared with someone special. Just as I did.
