Self-important, over-dramatic, uninspired.
Perfectly adorable
if their story seems completely bonkers, almost like a feverish work of fiction, you ain't heard nothing yet.
View MoreThere are moments that feel comical, some horrific, and some downright inspiring but the tonal shifts hardly matter as the end results come to a film that's perfect for this time.
View MoreWhen you view a film by George A. Romero that misses the horror mark by a wide margin, there is the distinct possibility that it was never intended as horror, but something more, beyond the slice and dice genre. "Bruiser" is such a film. It has elements of "black comedy" throughout that bring to mind dark classics such as "Ms. 45" (annoying little dog and costume party finale). Peter Stormare is great as the bruiser boss from hell, and the acting throughout is good for this type movie. Visually it is classy and interesting. The story itself of "milktoast" getting revenge on his abusers while far from original, holds interest. - MERK
View MoreAfter years of being tread upon and cheated on, a man awakens to find his face has a been replaced by an blank, white mask.I have always appreciated Romero for his non-zombie films. Sure, he will always be known as the zombie guy, and his first three (Night, Dawn, Dead) are masterpieces. But he just keeps going... while some of his lesser known films ("Monkey Shines" and "Martin") are among his best work. This, too, is probably the last good film he made (as of 2013).Apparently, due to marketing it as horror, what resulted was the film going straight-to-video. I get that, but I do not know how to say this is not horror. I see it is a drama of sorts, but there is no denying the blood and supernatural elements.Peter Stormare is excellent (one of the best character actors alive) and, of course, Tom Atkins is the best part of the film. Tom is such a nice guy, it is a pleasure to see him excel.
View MoreBruiser, perhaps George Romero's most bizarre film to date (yes, even stranger than knights on motorbikes or a telepathic psycho killer monkey), is the darkly comical story of Henry Creedlow, a trusting, congenial fellow who allows himself to be treated like a doormat by almost everyone he knows, including his sleazy boss Milo (Peter Stormare), his beautiful wife Janine (the stunning Nina Garbiras), and his supposed best friend James (Andrew Tarbet); in fact, Henry is such a nobody in the eyes of others that he wakes up one morning to find his face completely devoid of character, white and featureless with pin-holes for eyes. Lacking a visible identity, the now liberated Henry goes a little crazy and proceeds to do what he has only previously dreamt of: stand up to those people who have crapped on him from a great height. As if this concept wasn't weird enough, George's bold treatment of his already unconventional material makes Bruiser even more of an audacious and admirable movie: social commentary, existential musing, witty dialogue, exaggerated characters, surprisingly unrestrained sex, and a truly off-beat, cartoonish finale featuring hedonistic, costumed party-goers at a nightclub, cult horror rock band The Misfits, and a frickin' laser gun, all go to guarantee that, while it might not always work quite as well as intended, Bruiser makes for one hell of a unique viewing experience, and is further proof that Romero is not the one-trick-pony many accuse him of being.
View MoreWOW This was an excellent movie.First off, let me say that this was not an easy movie to find. I could not find a copy at any video store or library anywhere near here. Finally, after searching for months, I got digital cable the there it was. I immediately went and watched it and I must say, I was VERY impressed by what I saw. This has to be one of the most underrated films EVER. I looked and saw it only had a 5.0 on IMDb (as of 4/18/08). It should have At least a 7! Romero has created his best horror movie classic since Day of the Dead. Jason Flemyng played Henry Creedlow better than anyone else could have possibly done. Peter Stormare was disgusting as Milo Styles, which is what was intended! Leslie Hope was excellent as Rosemary Newley, Milo's unhappy wife. Nina Garbiras was great as the abusive, dishonest, annoying Janine Creedlow. Andrew Tarbet was perfect to play Jim Larson, Henry's thieving friend. And Ol' Tom Atkins was great as Detective McCleary.Along with an excellent cast there was a very morbid tone throughout the movie which really set the mood in a lot of scenes. Also, the music was very well placed, and even about 4 songs played LIVE by The Misfits (one of my favorite bands). The errors in this movie were quite numerous, particularly those dealing with plot holes. Many things went unexplained in the movie. But...I don't care. This is easily one of my favorite movies. I cannot wait to watch it again! I give Bruiser a 10/10. Romero fans should not miss this one!
