I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.

Instead, you get a movie that's enjoyable enough, but leaves you feeling like it could have been much, much more.

Very good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.

This is a really good and fun comic crime thriller. It's worth watching if you like comic heroes and superhero type of films. This particular film might appeal to those that like crime noir.Dick Tracy is after a man calling himself Splitface. Splitface is a serial killer - and out to get 14 people in remembrance of his jury trial when he was put in prison for murder. Splitface is out of prison and now out to get revenge on those that put him there. Some interesting scenes with lots of action. The film is comic book-ish in it's way but not so much so that fans of crime noir could not enjoy the film. I'd say the film is more noir-ish than comic book-ish.8/10

With its Noirish Photography and Ambiance this, the First of Four "Dick Tracy" Features is a B-Movie Surprise with its Brutal Violence and Oddball Characters.Morgan Conway is the Weakest Link in this otherwise Fine Film that Contains more than its Share of Suspense, Thrills, and Entertainment. Mike Mazurki is Perfectly Cast as the Psychotic Villain "Splitface". He Brings a Hulkish and Nightmarish Character that Possibly Caused Kids in the 1940's to Squirm. There is an Occultist Astrologer complete with Telescope and Crystal Ball that is Dealt a Violent and Visceral Confrontation with the Psychologically and Physically Scarred "Splitface'. Tess Trueheart with a Tracy Devotion that is Commendable and yet Sad. Junior makes and Appearance for some Comedy and Needed Relief from the Gruesome Stuff. Pat Patton serves the Same Purpose.Overall, the Violence, Noir Night Scenes, and general Feel of the Movie is Not what one would Expect for this Type. Recommended for Fans of the Comic Strip and B-Movie Lovers. Note...The 1990 "Dick Tracy" Movie made by and starring Warren Beatty is a faithful and wondrous underrated Film. A colorful, ultra-stylish, and very different Movie that deserves more attention.

DICK TRACY has the film noir look of the '40s and some interesting plot devices involving a slasher out for revenge. With its brief running time and low-budget values, it's strictly the kind of fare that used to play the lower half of double bills for the Saturday matinee crowds.Still, it's not bad as far as these B-pics go (some excellent B&W photography)--but MORGAN CONWAY is nobody's idea of what the famous sleuth should look like. RALPH BYRD was a much better choice in those Tracy serials--he must have been busy when they got to making this one. Anne Jeffreys is pert and pretty as Tess but has little to do. (Did Hollywood ever give her a substantial role?) Little Mickey Kuhn (he was Beau Wilkes in GWTW and the young man Vivien Leigh flirted with in A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE) is delightful as the boy detective who helps solve the case. For the villain of the piece, we have Mike Mazurki wearing a scar that looks like a decent make-up job and hulking in the shadows whenever the next murder takes place. Not bad, and certainly one of the better entries in the DICK TRACY films of the '40s--but what it needed was square-jawed RALPH BYRD in the title role.Summing up: a good programmer.

Morgan Conway vainly attempts to portray the comic strip hero. all the supporting characters from the strip are her & adequatly portrayed.Mike Muzurki play Splitface, the mad slasher. there are a few good comic moments, & thankfully the film is only 62 minutes long. fair production values. Rating ** 60 points IMDB 5
