Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
View MoreA clunky actioner with a handful of cool moments.
Worth seeing just to witness how winsome it is.
The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;
View MoreThe Director has a good eye for shot composition, and the pace of the film was good. Moved along well. Main setback was the lack of character development for the male lead. He was generally unconvincing up against the solid performance by the female lead Leisha Hailey.As a result of his lack of authenticity, the transition he goes through into the more evil version of himself felt forced, unnatural and unjustified. A symptom of bad casting, writing, editing (essential parts of his development could have ended up on the cutting room floor) or bad acting.The sound design was good but the dialogue had issues. Better sound recordist needed, or quieter locations, or a better dialogue edit, or a bunch of ADR sessions would have helped here. Not sure which dept was at fault. Ahh yes, you guys heard of this thing called "Denoise"" RX4 would have helped clean up your noisy recordings.Overall it was compelling, only for the strong female lead. All other casting in the film was mediocre.I loved the drift away section in the party scene. Total Magic !! Spend more time looking for the right actors and put some money into hiring a more seasoned casting department. Even on a low budget, if you put the time in, more ideal actors will emerge.
View MoreI "had to" watch it because my girlfriend's nephew was in it.The nephew did all right in his small part.The two main characters were not very likable, so it was difficult to "care" about what happened to them.The bad background music was louder than the dialog in some places; the sound was also echo-y and sometimes hard to understand.After moving - away from the woman's friends so she can get over her depression, which doesn't make any sense - they find an adult human skull in the clogged drain of their new house, which also doesn't make any sense because the pipe was too small.Some medium-sized furry animals I couldn't identify - big squirrels? - made a couple of appearances for no apparent reason.I guess it was supposed to be about ghosts, but it seemed more like the woman was just getting nutty. After imagining some other women wandering around in a bloody dress, she ends up killing hubby and best friend, then ends up in a padded cell after or while having a baby.Altogether not worth watching unless you're trying to sleep.
View MoreYou've all read the others reviews and I concur so all I wanted to do was warn anyone who is thinking about hiring this....DON'T! It's gotta be one of the most boring "horror" movies I've ever seen. I was assuming after looking at the cover and it's R ( in Australia) rating that there'd be a bit of gore and excitement.I saw all of the After Dark titles on the shelf and assumed they'd be good. With Fertile Ground I was wrong.Neither. So I don't know how it got it's rating of R. There was about as much gore or anything! Snoozefest! Pity because the actors tried or did well. The plot was just far too pedestrian.
View More'FERTILE GROUND': Two Stars (Out of Five) 2011 was not a very good year for 'After Dark Originals'! We got 'SCREAM OF THE BANSHEE' (one of the worst entries in the horror series ever) and we also got this. Three of the seven films were decent though (not too impressive but decent) and I have yet to see the other two (but I've heard they're pretty bad as well). This one is directed and co-written (along with Jace Anderson) by Adam Gierasch (the man behind another much better 'After Dark Original' from two years ago: 'AUTOPSY') and revolves around a pregnant woman being haunted by ghosts of the people who passed away in her home years earlier. It's pretty poorly made on all levels and is pretty much a waste of time for anyone, even if you're a horror film fanatic. Leisha Hailey stars as Emily Weaver, a happily pregnant woman who suffers a severe miscarriage as the film begins. She then moves out to a house she inherited in the country, with her husband Nate (Gale Harold), to get away from things. Once there she begins seeing things though, of the supernatural kind she believes. She tries to talk to her doctor and husband about it but they're both very dismissive about the subject, believing she's just over stressed. When she looks into the history of the house she learns that the people who lived there before her all died, as well as shared similarities to her and her husband. She then becomes more and more frantic as she must confront (what she believes are) the ghosts of the people who lived there before her alone. The movie is over acted, under written and severely misdirected. It's a shame considering Gierasch's last 'After Dark' entry was so enjoyable. This is just B movie trash and there's nothing fun or interesting about it. Parts of it are creepy and somewhat disturbing but not to a quality effect. The movie just feels poorly made. There's nothing really to like here at all. It's not nearly as bad as 'SCREAM OF THE BANSHEE' or a lot of other trashy low quality B horror films but it is pretty bad all the same.
