Truly Dreadful Film
not horrible nor great
It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
View MoreThe film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
View MoreKajal (played by Sridevi) is obsessed with money, and as a result begins to disrespect her upstanding, honorable husband, Raj, (Anil Kapoor) for not giving her what she wants. When rich Janhvi (Urmila Matondkar) falls in love with Raj, Kajal bullies him into marrying Janhvi in exchange for a large sum of money. Kajal soon discovers that the wealth she has so desired will not bring the happiness she expected. The incomparably beautiful Sridevi gives an outstanding performance as Kajal, easily working the audience for and against her as the scene required. Matondkar is also excellent in her role. Kapoor, though playing his part well, is overshadowed by the two strong performances by the actresses, but that is as it should be for this film. The direction is superb, the music is good, the choreography average, the traditional costumes stunning, and the supporting cast some of the finest. I was surprised at just how fantastic this movie was, and it is written well enough that I was uncertain as to how it would finally end. I highly recommend this film, if for nothing else than Sridevi's performance. The star-studded cast also includes Kader Khan, Farida Jalal, Johnny Lever, Paresh Rawal, Upasana Singh and Saeed Jaffrey
View MoreFirst of all I totally agree with the comment given by the user Dave Abott. This is one of the best bollywood movie ever. It teaches how greed eats ones happiness. it also teaches how one should spend money carefully and how badly it effects when it is spent wastefully. But unfortunately half of the movie was filled with unnecessary comedies. By deducting the unnecessary comedies this should have more dramas relating to greed. This movie could have been the "LEGEND OF BOLLYWOOD" if it would had done that way. Especially, the acting of Sridevi who was perfect for the role of a greedy woman and Anil kapoor who was perfect for the role of a thrifty person and a loving husband. All and all I think this movie should have had some MORE family dramas rather than unnecessary comedies.
View MoreKajal is married to Raj thinking him to be very rich. But Raj who is an Engineer by profession is not so. He is from a middle class family. But Kajal is not ready for a middle class lifestyle. He tries to convince Raj to take bribes and make a lot of money. Raj is not ready to sacrifice his honesty for money. They live for several years, have two children but Kajal still lives in her fantasy world of Cars, Bungalows. Jahnavi played by Urmila is the daughter of Raj's boss. She reaches India and falls in love with Raj. She offers a lot of money to Kajal in exchange of Raj. Kajal readily agrees. Little did she realize that this small happiness will change her life for ever. All three lead characters played by Anil Kapoor, Sri devi and Urmila have justified their role.
View MoreSridevi is absolutely fantastic. This was her last Bollywood movie which she had signed before leaving. Hoever, it was by far her best performance. She was pregnant at the time with her first child, who incidentally was named after the character of Urmila Matondkar, another artiste who gave her best performance, and for once was not over the top. Anil Kapoor who always gives his best performance is also good as is Johnny Lever who is hilarious and Kader Khan. OParesh Rawal is incredibly funny and we see the debut of a new actress who can only be named 'AbbaDabbaJabba'. Dinesh Hingoo also makes an appearance in the film. Farida Jalal and Saeed Jaffery are also valued artistes in the making this film worthwhile watching. The best bit about this film is how the plot is lifted from a Hollywood movie and yet is Indian enough for Indian audience consumption.
