Harold Gern, a shady businessman from New York, is spending a holiday in Puerto Rico with his attractive wife Evelyn. They are joined by Martin Joyce, Harold's lawyer, who has come to discuss the latest indictment. This movie was so-so. It had it's moments, but wasn't the greatest.

Your blood may run cold, but you now find yourself pinioned to the story.

The biggest problem with this movie is it’s a little better than you think it might be, which somehow makes it worse. As in, it takes itself a bit too seriously, which makes most of the movie feel kind of dull.

A mysterious apocalypse creates void of oxygen in atmosphere an wipes out all human (and animal) life. Three people, a businessman, his wife and lawyer are scuba diving at that moment, and when they resurface, they discover everyone are dead and they might be the only ones alive. Starring Betsy Jones-Moreland, Anthony Carbone and (future 'Chinatown' screenwriter) Robert Towne credited as Edward Wain (with this performance he proves to be much more talented as a writer than an actor). One woman and two men are always perfect combination for intrigues and drama. Especially in the setting of post-apocalyptic world. In that sense 'Last Woman on Earth' bares many similarities with Corman's own earlier film 'Day the World Ended'.Plot is intriguing and screenplay is fairly well written by Robert Towne. There are its weak points, but these are, again, mainly the fault of Roger Corman's style rushed production. The filming started before the screenplay was finished, and it shows in its catastrophic ending that itself is not all that bad but feels - rushed, but at the same time it wonderfully underlines the relationships between three protagonists and their outlook for future. Good writing is supported by good acting jobs mainly by Carbone and Jones-Moreland. Low budget shines through less in this low key but ambitious science fiction masterpiece. With all its weak spots 'Last Woman on Earth' is my own personal favorite from Corman alongside 'A Bucket of Blood' and 'The Intruder'.

Seems like every sentence uttered begins with the other person's name. Real people don't speak like that. At least, no one I know does. So it sort of doesn't allow you to see the movie as real. Which is fine, as long as you don't mind that. But for me, it ruins the movie experience. That said, it is watchable, unlike many other horrible films. Good as a 'B' movie for your saturday matinee double feature. At only an hour long, you won't get sick of the crappy dialogue before it ends.

As the plot reads: 3 people are deep sea diving and when they resurface they find everyone in Puerto Rico dead - maybe everyone in the world. Possible spoilers below: -------------------------------------------------------------- What I did not get was the fact they were arguing over one boat/yacht. It's Puerto Rico for crying out loud! Plenty of boats and yachts around - why fight over one? The only thing I can figure out is that Martin was trying to make a point to Harold: "Harold does not own the world" (as Harold acted throughout the film). ---------------------------------------------------------------Outside of the possible spoiler the movie made perfect sense. I'm sure they were there for weeks - maybe months - so nature will take it course (one woman and two men - need I say more?). The fancy clothes they were wearing: they dress how the prefer to dress just like we all do..... and I'm sure they were trying to maintain a sense of normalcy by dressing how they prefer to dress - help to try to keep their sanity. I found each of them right and wrong - depending on which subject they were speaking on. No one is 100% right - that is realistic. The fighting? Normal. What has happened has shocked them I'm sure. To make matters worse: imagine yourself in their place - just you and two other people for MONTHS - not one other person to talk to... I'm sure they were getting on each others nerves - that is realistic. Now imagine it's your own wife (or husband) and someone else is trying to 'be with them'... I'm sure there would be plenty of people like Harold "She's my wife and not just on paper". Yes this movie is gets VERY philosophical -- one of the reasons I enjoyed it so much.8.5/10

The problem was this movie was that the idea was rather silly. There is a short out of air in the World allegedly causing everyone else to die. What about all the other hundreds of people scuba diving at the exact same time? What about people who happened to have breathing tanks? I guess this movie was entertaining in a silly way. It would be hard to believe that after just a week of being sex starved the husband and his lawyer would be fighting tooth and nail after the wife. The movie attempted to have a philosophical debate between the control freak businessman-husband and the near beatnik lawyer. All and all, this was a silly movie. However, I guess because it was made fifty years ago, it at least didn't have senseless violence, etc. It would have made a really awful remake.
