A brilliant film that helped define a genre

While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.

The Kevin Sorbo family is handsome enough and the acting is workmanlike; but the screenplay, the story, by Sorbo's wife Sam, is lame, stupid really. Dr. Sol Harkens is an author who is celebrated as the World's Greatest Atheist. He is funny and entertaining and aggressive, and he sells a lot of books. He is also a womanizer and an alcoholic, looking for trouble. And he finds it, in a predictable automobile crash and a predictable coma. He has a vision, a near death experience, wherein he talks to his son David, a beautiful boy who was taken to God before his ninth birthday, and due to which Sol has reacted by hating God. So, for starters, Harkens is not an atheist at all, he is a believer who is very angry at God for taking his son from him. But atheists do NOT hate God, atheists do not believe that God exists. No atheist whom I know became one because of an awful experience, they just finally - mostly in their late teens - reacted to the utter lack of evidence for God. Second, the atheists that Sol Harkens is caricaturing -- the New Atheists - are none of them womanizers or alcoholics (well, Hitchens liked to drink as I recall). And finally, the story seems to suggest that: if only atheists had near death experiences they would see God, see the error of their ways, and convert. It was entertaining enough, but lame, really lame. They should hire a few atheist consultants to see what they really think and believe. But honestly, the audience of this film is not atheists who need to convert, the audience is Christians who need to feel better about their spiritual beliefs. Faith is tricky, and it needs all the support that it can get.

Unlike SO many other reciewers, I can watch a movie without looking for propoganda and some secret message. What I hoped for in watching this film was something heartwarming and sweet...and this movie was...and even a little sad. To not have gigantic theatre release and backed by big names in Hollywood, this movie was well done. No, I didn't see any "message" in this film...and no, I haven't been "converted," nor did I expect to be...because I don't bristle and feel the need to put on a "fight" every time I hear the "g" word mentioned. Lost faith hasn't been renewed, my heart wasn't touched...except to say that the movie was sweet...nothing more, nothing less...the movie was well done. Everyone leaving such bad reviews must have felt that their atheism was threatened in some way. Glad I'm not that immature or easily bullied...afraid I might "find god," just because of a movie.Obviously these people's atheism isn't very strong that a movie makes them so up in arms. Let me check myself to make sure I'm still me. Yep...still haven't found god just because of this movie, still NOT looking for him and don't plan to...so all of you so upset over this film...go back into hiding. You'll be safe from the powerful mind scrubbing that this movie is going to brainwash you with and make you sell bibles door to door.As one review was titled... Seriously?Grow up.To those who can think for themselves, watch the movie...it's worth a watch.

I wanted to like this movie, but it's self righteous and the portrayal of atheists as lost, hard heartened, bad parents and alcoholics is incredibly awful. The plot is completely predictable. Sean Hannity?!!? Good grief! Get yourself some anti-nausea medicine to watch and a vomit bag for that scene. Acting was fair. Location and Dionne Warwick was the best part.

In this movie, he was an unbeliever, due to the death of his young son. He lost faith, and wanted to punish God. But did not God give his one and only son? Have we not had a similar experience? Blaming others including God? He accepted this and was reunited with his family, just like Christ. And his wife full of faith, went to see our Lord!! I say to all of you, that we all have had a similar experience, and there is no reason to suffer alone, beliveve in the Lord, and be saved, this movie is/was excellent!!
