Good start, but then it gets ruined
Brilliant and touching
Best movie ever!
Instead, you get a movie that's enjoyable enough, but leaves you feeling like it could have been much, much more.

MINIMUM SPOILERSThere were some CGIs which were bad even for the 2002.But when they served inmates (who are killers, etc.) meals on metal plates, with metal knives and metal forks in their cell, I had almost stopped watching.I mean how both the director and the guys who wrote the script were not smart enough to spot this detail and overlooked it.The rest of the movie was so-so, if you are into horror movies give it a try but don't expect nothing special.
View MoreIn the claustrophobic environment of a prison facility four wretched inmates discover the diary of Charles Danvier (Geoffrey Carey), a man famed for escaping the prison through the use of dark occultism. Carrère (Gérald Laroche) conscientiously committing fraud at his company is newly admitted to the cell and despite his intense interest in the memoir has little interest in escaping, still awaiting his wife to post bail. Transsexual Marcus (Clovis Cornillac) and his demented protégé Pâquerette (Dimitri Rataud), prone to eating everything including watches. The fourth party is the reclusive and utterly passive, but well versed Lassalle (Philippe Laudenbach), committed for murdering his wife during breakfast. When incantations found in the dilapidated book turn out to have real power, the group slowly becomes enticed by the possibility of escaping prison through supernatural means...Despite several gory scenes "Malefique" must be kept apart, due to theme as well as form, from the brutally visceral new wave of French horror movies, such as "High Tension" or "Inside", owing its allegiance more to "Hellraiser" or "Warlock". In a world of mysticism somewhat recognisable with organically malevolent magic collapsing on weaknesses of characters, enticing into self-inflicted torture and pain. "Malefique" equally well could be perceived as part of the universe of Cenobites, as the existence of evil has a deceptively analogous similarity.Unlike however many of the "Hellraiser" sequels or contemporary French horror films the movie is soundly structured around a well-construed premise with the claustrophobic confines imbuing a sense of inevitability, strongly wrapped around four well-conceived, albeit outlandish characters. Although seemingly treading down recognisable dramatic corridors and using reclycable clichés "Malefique" does come out honest and powerful, a large part thanks to the the cast fronted by a rigid and conceited Carey. Ending on a high with a welcome twist, which may not invite rapturous applause, the end scene should create a vile smirk on the faces of its satisfied audience.
View Morehad to see this cos it looked like a great scary premise- prisoners finding magic book,oo err! claustrophobic terror ensues, etc. but there didn't seem to be a story to go along with the great idea. rather than chilling/physcological horror, it relied on effects out in the open- fire and OTT body horror- , which didn't scare at all if your over 12. The logic at the end is ridiculous, with characters being killed off for nothing other than bodycount. waste of good characters- which were the best thing about this film.obviously low budget, which doesn't spoil it, the film really goes nowhere, and- icant believe im going to say this- it needs a Hollywood remake. you simply loose interest in this version. definitely not in the same league as other french films coming out in the last few years like crimson rivers which were at least watchable/entertaining, malefique isn't watchable to the end to be honest. and i bet you can guess the ending before you have watched the film. really really disappointing- impossible to recommend.
View MoreI was hooked from beginning to end. Great horror comes from disturbing imagery and organic shocks that are created not to make you jump, but to make you go "What the f*ck did I just see?" All the other commentators gave short summaries of what the film is about, so I won't rehash what has already been said. I was telling other people about this movie days after I had seen it just because it still haunted me. I even had a bad dream after seeing it, and I am a true horror fan, not easily spooked by tripe like "The Grudge" or even "Silent Hill". What gave me the bad dreams was the unease I felt about what I would do if I were in that cell with those guys. What would my personal horror be? my subconscious took me there, and it was not pleasant. That my friends is what a good horror flick does to you! The best part of this movie is that it is subtle. It's not about Bogeymen that jump out at you, alien invasions, or tons of gore. It's the opposite. The horror you create in your own mind. The irony for the four characters is that the horror comes not from an external force that asserts it's power over them. Simply, the men ask for the one thing they desire, and they get it...but not in the way they imagined. So on the one hand, they get what they wish for from an occult book, but may ultimately wish they hadn't. Sometimes being locked in a jail cell is the best place to be!
