Excellent, a Must See
everything you have heard about this movie is true.
View MoreIt's not great by any means, but it's a pretty good movie that didn't leave me filled with regret for investing time in it.
View MoreA clunky actioner with a handful of cool moments.
A cult film which this is known to be, or is this just how I perceived it. I had seen bits of this movie when I was a teen, where of course it would of been trimmed down, where it has always fascinated me, the visually attractive cover of a man trapped, and coincidentally, that's the entire message of the movie, where it takes a kidnapping to finally free a selfish man of his nagging girlfriend, left behind in the Phillipene's. She was kidnapped prior. Later that night, the deep river man gets himself into some strife, where he escapes into the rivers and mountains of Asia, only to land in much more strife, with a cannibalistic, ritualistic, and savage tribe. Our deep river stud falls in love with the chief's daughter, a lost girl, a very sad tale ensues. Although the movie has a script that leaves a lot to be desired, some truly atrocious dialogue, some sentences out of place, whatever, and some of the lead actor's words are too rushed (in little bits not spontaneous, as in the actors thought) this is just as good as Cannibal Holocaust. Not the real sick horror show you expect, although there are some quite shocking and bloody moments, Man from Deep River isn't a bad outing. Some moments may bore or tire, but definitely worth a watch, as they're are some truly beautifully tragic and though provoking moments between our lover lead couple. Not for animal or humanitarian lovers.
View MoreI have this book by a guy called Jay Slater and he rates all sorts of Cannibal and Zombie horror movies in his book. If he was actually reviewing them right I would be so pleased but I am starting to suspect his reviews. Deep River Savages is a classic, it is the original movie that started the wold lets go to Borneo and make a cannibal movie trend. So for the amount of fun I have had over the years with this genre Umberto Lenzi deserves a medal. What I like about cannibal movies is that they always have daft plots, beautiful locations and loads of good looking women. Lets not forget the large portions of violence and gore. The Plot, an Englishman goes into the bush gets captured by savages (well he thinks they are and in a nice touch they think he is as well). After many moons he is accepted by the tribe and gets to marry this babe. Believe when I say I was really jealous of him. This seems to be the same plot as Little Big Man but hey who cares. Nudity. Loads, unfortunately the blonde at the start leaves the movie before she gets naked. Happily loads of native (to Borneo) women get naked and perform all manner of bizarre rituals. Gore. A Bit restrictive in this movie. Fortunately the cannibals turn up to rape a woman then eat her, a very productive use. Then the cannibals get blasted in a similar fashion. Overall I loved this movie and rate it as a 10/10.
View MoreLenzi's earliest "cannibal" romp is more interested in a man's personal voyage into self discovery than human chomping. Still, it's a mildly diverting curio that features stretches of animal torture, native nudity (Me Me Lai mostly), some gory deaths, and some human endurance tests ("Fear Factor" 70's-style). Ivan Rassimov, who dials his performance down in this oater, plays a Brit photographer who travels to Thailand to film the local wildlife. He gets into a deadly but dull altercation with a local and takes off up the river. His guide is slaughtered and he is captured by a tribe of savages who put him through his paces and convert him to their way of life. Of course, it's the constantly naked Me Me Lai who assures his conversion to the ways of the wild man. Lai is cute but not as superhot as, for example, Vanity in "Tanya's Island", or Laura Gemser. The photography is professional and the direction is more focused than is usual for the inconsistent Lenzi. Of particular note is the great, often repeated signature score by Daniele Patucchi.
View MoreA British photographer who kills a local in self-defense in Thailand, decides to take a boat up stream to take pictures of sea life. After a while he falls asleep, waking up to find his tour guide dead. He's then captured by savages who think he's a fish-man because of his wetsuit. He's eventually accepted but still longs to get home. Everyone talks about the animal violence, I won't because who cares, they're ANIMALS. The movie is lumped in with the cannibal films of the same era, but the cannibalism is pretty much secondary (relegated to one or two scenes) Overall this film isn't that bad and even fun in spots. My Grade: C+ DVD Extras: Umberto Lenzi Interview; Photo Gallery; Theatrical Trailer; Trailers for "Duck! The Carbine High Massacre", "Zombi 2", "Massacre in Dinosaur Valler", and "Warlock Moon" Easter Egg: Umberto's personal production stills Eye Candy: Me Me Lay shows all; various extras show breasts, poontang, and ass
