Memorable, crazy movie

Awesome Movie

The acting in this movie is really good.

One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.

Interesting, if stage bound, PBS adaptation of Nancy Barr's play (by the playwright herself. A suburban housewife gets caught up in a crime taking place in front of her in a shopping center parking lot, and ends up shooting in a neighbor in the head in a moment of madness (no spoilers, this is all within the first five minutes). What follows is a slightly surreal, alternately sad and funny pas de deux between Mrs. Cage, and the detective questioning her to try and understand what happened. This could have been stultifying stuff, but two magnificent and perfectly understated performances by Anne Bancroft and Hector Elizondo raise this from self-conscious to being full of life and loss. Director Robert Allen Ackerman sometimes seems to be trying too hard to keep his characters moving around the one set, but he does some nice visual and aural work in combining flashbacks with the present moment. Very surprising this seems to never have been put out on VHS or DVD.

I was very lucky to see this beaut. For years, I felt Anne Bancroft's best role was as Annie Sullivan until I sat down to dinner in front of this TV flick. I don't think anyone else could have put a spin on this role better than she did. It was touted as a comedic film but it's hardly that. It's more tragic and melancholy than anything and Anne's performance will wreck you for days. Forget The Graduate, this will make you remember her forever. It's reminiscent of Judy Garland's performance in "A Child Is Waiting," which I feel is the best thing that Garland ever did. It will hit a note with anyone who has felt trapped and unfulfilled or walked upon and needed to strike back.

I loved this show!!!!!!! The acting of both Anne Bancroft and Hector Elizondo was amazing and mesmerizing. I could not stop watching it. The connection between them was powerful. The plot was haunting and thought provoking, it really made me think about many things in the world between men and women/husbands and wives. I saw it for the first and only time 12 years ago on PBS and unfortunately could not record it at the time. I have searched for it unsuccessfully ever since..... Road rage, it is said, arises from the innate desire for instant retributive justice. We see someone do something - that impacts us adversely and directly - and we feel it is our duty to do something about it. I haven't sen this movie since it was first broadcast, but it lives with me. Every so often something happens that it comes back to haunt me. Someone steals my space in the parking lot - right in front of me - and I get mad and I have a desparate, unsatisfied need to get even. In another movie, Kathy Bates gratified that desire, wrecking the young girls' beetle convertible with her street cruiser. "I'm older, but I have way more insurance". Mrs Cage has done everything right in her life. She has always obeyed the rules and done everything properly. Now the detective must uncover what caused that to crack. It is only the fear of having to explain myself to the cops afterwards that keeps me in line.
