Memorable, crazy movie

I wanted to but couldn't!

what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.

This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.

I love this movie...in fact, I love all the Margaret Rutherford Marple movies. They were on continuous play when I was young--when there was still a "Late, Late Show" and a "Sunday Morning Movie". The story does swerve mightily from the book, but it is no less entertaining for that. Rutherford's expressions are a delight as she marches through Ackenthorp Manor as a very nosy and bossy maid (she was in her seventies I believe). Her Miss Marple is the Auntie most of us would love to have had. Curmudgeon-like and yet kind and funny, and very, very wise.

Agatha Christie's Miss Marple mystery, "4:50 from Paddington", gets a fine screen-translation here, with Margaret Rutherford excellent as Jane Marple, the impertinent lover of whodunits. After witnessing a murder on a train, Marple deduces the victim's body was thrown overboard near the country estate of an eccentric British family; she proceeds to land herself a job as maid to the household in order to investigate further. A memorable yarn, though the plot peaks at the midway point, with the discovery of the corpse; the concluding events consist mainly of finger-pointing. Terrific early scenes complimented by excellent cinematography by Geoffrey Faithful and a lively score from Ron Goodwin. Remade for television in 1987 with Joan Hickson in the lead, who appears here as Mrs. Kidder; also in 2004 as part of "Agatha Christie's Marple", featuring Geraldine McEwan. **1/2 from ****

Miss Marple is one of my favorite characters and go-to for fun film enjoyment. As soon as I hear that theme tune, I can't help but smile. I know Margaret Rutherford will delight for many a repeat performance. She is a gem my friends. Not your typical leading lady but definitely unique and unparalleled in composition. You would just love joining her for tea!The mystery elements are simple but intriguing, the plot beguiling, the actors commendable and the ending satisfying. Enjoy watching her and Mr. Stringer canoodle to solve crime, such a delightful team. I find it so hopeful for the mature women among us that they are married and he is really cute!! haha High recommend for suspense, hilarity, and good old fashioned cinematic entertainment.

My history of introspection in film starts with clever mystery writers. Then when talkies fell on us there was a huge experimental breeding ground for techniques that worked. By the 40s that chapter was all over and noir was incubated.Agatha Christie played a central role in this history with her wild experiments, sliding narratives and dynamic reinterpretation of what we know. So when a mature cinematic tradition deals with her material, the solutions fascinate me.In the books, the detective is a compelling personality: doomed by chance to be a matron in a small village, she is nonetheless the brightest lamp in the area. Here, she is a shuffling if fearless busybody. This adjustment turns the story possibilities inside out. She doesn't figure anything out in this movie, just finds clues.I know there are folks who have fallen in love with some actor/actress who portrays one of Christie's detectives. I like some of them myself, but it is airplanes compared to birds. There is still some grace, but not the fluid life of the earlier.My original IMDb comment on this was one of several hundred deleted by a Christian warrior because of a comment on another film.
