Wow! Such a good movie.
This Movie Can Only Be Described With One Word.
The Worst Film Ever
This is a must-see and one of the best documentaries - and films - of this year.
View MoreI saw this movie in my teens forty years ago. I saw it again recently. Nothing has changed. It is a great film now as it was 40 years ago..and 40 years before that. Timeless. A classic. The viewer will enjoy the chemistry between Lombard and Powell. Along with a great cast to assist them! (Allan Mowbray is always fun to watch...see Topper). Beautful film.
View MoreMy Man Godfrey – Ted Tetzlaff as cinematography capture a great moment and smoothly tilt and panning shot, for example when William walking to the stairs, camera dolly was perfect follow his steps towards the room, you can see no cuts and brought attention to what will be next. Editing technique and final touches made the movie looks great and no need of miss any moments of scene. Connection of dialogue and music were done professional no jump cut meanwhile the editor did wonderful job. My Man Godfrey – Definitely has quality and artistic eyes setting. During reviews you can see that director and the team did an amazing scene setup and makes viewers to keep watching the film. For example the scene at the "Dump" where forgotten man lived you can see how decorative and looks real life. well done music director Charles Previn, we see romantic background music after William became a butler and more sound effects like the sound of horse when Mr. Eugene opened the door. The music tells us what will happen on scene. Subsequently when Godfrey had talk with Carol and suddenly Irene Appeared their dialog was followed by background romantic music that clarified the scene into love.– Eventually, it's an amazing movie, romantic drama and comedy that inspired my career. Scene setup both interior and exterior was well decorated and makes viewers keep looking at what next. Dialog is smooth moving and understandable, most of the scene was interior and created a romantic looks.
View MoreI watched this for, my 3rd and last time, last night. I JUST don't get why this movie has always been so popular. It is goofy--well let's call it madcap--and it is not even that funny. Who finds this funny and why? I guess I have never been a big fan of either William Powell OR Carole Lombard. And the idea of Carlo the protégé is stupid too. Did Alice Brady play the mother or the sister of Lombard? It's hard to tell from the cast list? Anyway, the mother character was really stupid AND stupid sounding--an annoyance, pure and simple. I just checked and it received SIX Oscar nominations, including Best Director (Gregory La Cava), Best Actor (William Powell), Best Supporting Actor (Mischa Auer), Best Actress (Carole Lombard), and Best Supporting Actress (Alice Brady).
View MoreIts SMASHING opening credits - which pans into the pitiful and literal dump that is Godfrey's home, and in doing so, promptly makes clear the prosperity & glamour that neighbors the impoverished - promises a lot; a bit more than what director Gregory La Cava could deliver on.It *was* quite the chuckle-fest, with few, if any at all, misses, but unfortunately zero laugh-out-loud moments. And the story strung me along efficiently, - a bit of a mystery around our titular man helps - but its completion is just plain unsatisfactory; rushed. Perhaps it would've been more tolerable had Godfrey's old pals been better developed. The romantic aspect doesn't do the picture any favors either. A more temperate and deserving love interest - which was available - might've instilled within me an ounce of happiness. Instead I've got none for the mismatched lovers. I am glad it wasn't *entirely* out of character for one party - their reluctance made it *slightly* charming - but still, it was a bit disappointing. All in all, despite what this mostly pessimistic review might indicate, the film is still rather entertaining, and given the conclusion to the mystery, a second watch is made easier with the viewer now being able to see much of the film through a different perspective. Here's hoping I enjoy it more next time!
