That was an excellent one.
A Major Disappointment
A lot of perfectly good film show their cards early, establish a unique premise and let the audience explore a topic at a leisurely pace, without much in terms of surprise. this film is not one of those films.
View MoreEach character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.
View More"Prospect" is a 14-minute science fiction film from last year and it was written and directed by Chris Caldwell. He is not a prolific filmmaker and same can be said about most other people working on this movie. The exception is actor Tony Doupe. However, this does not hurt the film at all as talent does not necessarily needs to be gained through experience. This was a pretty decent watch. Caldwell really went by the books here. The first third of the film elaborates on the whole scenario, father and daughter are on a remote planet. The middle part is about drama when the father gets attacked by a thief while his daughter is absent and the ending is finally about the daughter showing us how well-trained she is when she tries her best to cope with the situation. I enjoyed this little movie. I saw no real greatness in it, but then again, it is not exactly my favorite genre. People who love sci-fi more than I do may actually really love this one. Give it a chance. Thumbs up.
View MoreYou don't need a multi-million budget in order to produce a science fiction movie . PROSPECT is a case in point . All you need is well thought out location filming and here we see an unspoiled planet similar to AVATAR where a man and his teenage daughter search for a natural rare product that is needed by the human race . That said there does seem to be a lack of internal logic to the makers choosing this location . I was impressed by it so why do the characters need to wear space suits that indicate that the air is unbreathable to humans ? Let me elaborate evolution on this unnamed planet means we have lush forest/jungle and the off screen sound indicates birds live there and probably primates and yet human beings can't breath the air ? Surely there's enough oxygen content to keep the animal life alive and therefore humans even though they're alien to this eco-system ? . I suppose you're not supposed to think about the scenario and mis-en-scene in too much detail and instead you're supposed to concentrate on the narrative which can be described as a feminist Western in space for the TWILIGHT / HUNGER GAMES crowd which it succeeds in . That said like a large number of short films this one feels like a pitch and when the end credits come up it naturally feels like it's the opening credits of a feature length film .One starts to realise how rare a genuinely self contained short film is
View MoreProspect sees a father and daughter seeking their fortune in the resources hidden within an open new land – albeit that this new frontier is an alien planet far from Earth and the resource is not gold. The film sees the pair dealing with the challenges of the alien world and preparing for challenges not yet confronted whenever their plans are put to the ultimate test. To go into specifics beyond this is not really necessary or helpful but the film takes a very nice step up from merely being an engaging little piece into a very impacting and quite thrilling few minutes. This sense of control and pacing in the delivery is nicely done because it sets up the story with a certain amount of expectation for something to happen but when it delivers it hits the ground hard and has a good impact with the final few scenes on the way to a strong conclusion. Although it is people essentially running round in the woods in home- made costumes, it looks better than this because it is filmed nicely to add an alien feel to the place and the limited sets and costumes are pretty decent to add to this feel. The performances are a bit clunky when it comes to the dialogue, but this is limited and mostly it is action that speaks louder and works better. It isn't perfect but the idea is engaging and it sets up nicely into an impacting second half which is delivered with pace and well chosen and delivered developments.
