Great Film overall

Good start, but then it gets ruined

It's not great by any means, but it's a pretty good movie that didn't leave me filled with regret for investing time in it.

The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.

In 1984's "Purple Rain" - (singer/songwriter/guitarist) Prince plays "The Kid" who is a struggling musician (natch), trying to achieve his ultimate goal of recognition, fame, and, yes, of course, fortune.This rock-star vanity production played out (with all of its personal dramas thrown in for good measure) very much like an extended MTV music video.Purple Rain's story (presented in the predictable "Flashdance" mold) was shamefully formulaic right from the word "Go!".I guess one has to be a pretty big "Prince" fan in order to appreciate "Purple Rain" more than I did - 'Cause I found it to be quite tedious and tiresome a good part of the time.

This is NOT a movie to be rated or evaluated based on actors performances, cinematography, or other traditional cinematic evaluation criteria. Rather, this is a movie all about the music -- the story line is a mere thread to a musical tie-in. And please forgive, if not forget, an amateurish performance by Apollonia, as she is truly only a sex object in the grand scheme of things here. But look to the absolutely fabulous and energetic performances by Morris Day and The Time, so good and fun as counterpoint to the terrific music of Prince and his band, and of course ultimately the undeniable virtuosity of Prince himself.

With Prince having recently died, I've been meaning to take another look at Purple Rain, which I haven't seen in probably fifteen years or so. After just watching it, I can say my opinion on the movie hasn't changed much since I first saw it. The story is hackneyed and corny with some truly cringeworthy dramatic scenes. The family stuff, the abusive relationship our diminutive hero has with his new girlfriend -- it's all over the top in the worst way. But it does go into 'so bad it's good' territory for me and I think many others will see it that way too. Aside from the soapy stuff, the movie has a few things going for it. The music, for starters, is great. The Purple Rain soundtrack was excellent and most of the songs are used effectively here. Also Morris Day is hilarious as the villain. He steals every scene he's in. Prince himself is pretty bad as an actor but not quite as bad as Apollonia. She really stinks. It helps that she has a nice topless scene, though. Overall it's worth a look if you love the' 80s, Prince, or you're just a connoisseur of cheesy movies.

For his honor and a tribute just watched again after many years the film "Purple Rain" which I hadn't saw since a kid, and I must say I enjoyed it again it was a great film! To bad that the world has just lost a great talent like "Prince" he's gone to soon. Anyway his 1984 film was a showcase a film that mixed drama, pain, sex, and romance all while showing the wonderful talent in one up and coming musician that being the one and only "Prince". The plot is simple "Prince" is a young man who with his band at the local Minnesota club plays night after night only challenges are everywhere in the form of a rival singer and the purple one's home life is anything but, as his parents are an interracial couple with the alcoholic father beating and abusing mom. Still to help get thru some of the pain, sorrow, and drama "Prince" meets an exotic and sexy lady from New Orleans who brings talent and passion and hot steamy sex scenes were a treat of this film. And the music was some of "Prince's" best songs they carried this film making it a winner as a viewer can see a time when "Prince" had just became a worldwide known star as "Purple Rain" would show.
