Most undeservingly overhyped movie of all time??

Best movie of this year hands down!

While it is a pity that the story wasn't told with more visual finesse, this is trivial compared to our real-world problems. It takes a good movie to put that into perspective.

The joyful confection is coated in a sparkly gloss, bright enough to gleam from the darkest, most cynical corners.

I cannot believe I waited that long before watching this movie. It was filled with funny, hilarious, but moving moments. In a way it reflected the life of Chinese immigrants in Flushing, or even in the US. However, it was also a simple love story between mom and daughter, grandparents and daughter, and partners. We have to face the fear to live the life that we are eager for. The way the director told the story showed us a lively epitome of thousands of people finding out who they are and communicating with the world with their perspective.

I watched this when I was watching lesbian movies, but I found out that this is so much more than just a lesbian movie. I found out that it's a movie where the main-character just happened to be a lesbian.Saving Face is just as Asian as it is American. I love how they switch very naturally between the language and everything about the movie and the characters give a very trustworthy picture of how it is to grow up bilingually and bi-culturally. I think especially of a scene when Vivian (Lynn Chen) eats dinner with Wil (Michelle Krusiec) and her mother (Joan Chen) and she can't speak proper Chinese and mixes it with English.I especially enjoyed the performance of Michelle Krusiec, but the movie wouldn't be the same without the other characters. Thanks to the bi- characters the movie is very funny; the neighbor, the friend who always meets her at the subway and all the men the mother tries to date, etc. But it's of course not only a funny movie, it's a funny, serious, bi-cultural, lesbian and romantic movie that speaks of family, generations, traditions and values.

This movie is probably one of the only well done lesbian romantic comedies I've seen. It's light hearted and funny but also deals with matters serious enough to get the audience thinking.Joan Chen (wil's mum) stood out in this movie, she was funny and in character. Michelle Krusiec (Wil) was fairly good, but had many areas where she could have improved on. Her emotions were too mellow and she didn't successfully portray her struggle to stay in the closet. The mix dialogue of Chinese and English was slightly confusing at times (eg. Wil pretty much always speaks to Ma in English but Ma always replies in Chinese). There was a scene where Ma goes to the video store to rent videos and her English wasn't even good enough to ask "do you have any Chinese movies", I thought that was strange considering she can understand EVERYTHING Wil says in English. The storyline is actually quite deep for a romantic comedy as it does deal with gay-struggle, family expectations, cultural difference and ethnic identity as well as infatuation and love. I strongly recommend this movie to everyone it's a deep story with a happy ending.

This is the first comment which I have scripted so please be forgiving in your critique.I watched this movie for the first time last night and have to say that I am definitely going to add it to my DVD collection. Although it is 3 years old and does require you to read subtitles in part, it is one of the most moving, humorous, emotional and heartwarming movies I watched in a long time. The script and concept are particularly original within the ethnic climate in which the movie is set, and provides a particularly clear and incisive insight into American/Chinese society. In fact it illustrates that although there are cultural differences within all ethnic groups the overall way in which various social and ethical issues are dealt with is not really so different. The same movie could have been made about an Italian/American/Spanish or any other nationality family, within reason, and the overall responses and outcome would have been the same. The overall feel of the movie somehow had an element of truth, and leads me to wonder if this wasn't a portrayal of the script writers own experiences, if this is the case it only makes the movie more watchable and poignant. A great movie all round.
