The movie "Umizaru" is the story of 14 young Japan Coast Guard officers who take part in a grueling training to become rescue divers. They must endure and survive a 50-day training. Daisuke Senzaki (Hideaki Ito) and 13 other recruits take part in the training. With his love for the ocean and dream to work as a rescuer at sea, a rescue diver seemed like the perfect occupation for Daisuke.

I don't have all the words right now but this film is a work of art.

best movie i've ever seen.

It’s an especially fun movie from a director and cast who are clearly having a good time allowing themselves to let loose.

It's complicated... I really like the directing, acting and writing but, there are issues with the way it's shot that I just can't deny. As much as I love the storytelling and the fantastic performance but, there are also certain scenes that didn't need to exist.

Commonly touted as the Japanese Coast Guard version of Top Guns, this is an excellent movie that provides an in depth look into the training life of Japanese Coast Guard divers. They are an elite group of people and only 1% of the Japanese Coast Guards can make it to this training each year. There are generous amounts of underwater shots for a Japanese movie and you can tell the production team has taken pains in making the movie memorable. Apparently, it was a summer hit when released in Japan in 2004.This movie is the pilot to the drama which was released in Japan in 2005 and they've just released the sequel to this movie in May 2006. Very interesting concept that the producers have chosen and it had created lots of hype for the recently released sequel resulting in box office records as well.

Another pleasant surprise from the Japanese cinema. What I like the most about Japanese movies is its unpredictable line of events, and in this movie, once again, you can never guess what will happen next. I was always expecting a scene like Baywatch - which would make me turn off the TV - but it never happened :) The movie itself was shot in a simple but efficient way, no amazing and special tricks here, although the picture had nice detail and quality. The soundtrack could be better though, you can hardly notice it. The actors perform OK and pass on a great feeling of "team building" and the intensity between each "buddy", however they did seem a bit too young for the jobs. The plot evolves in a very steady way showing a different perspective of the typical military training. This movie moved me with its funny moments (typical Japanese), a few intense sad moments and, for people afraid to drown and of being breathless, the movie will have a few moments of anguish and uneasiness too! All in all, I'd say you can watch it with anyone any time.

The movie could have been perfect, full of good feelings and good will, packed up with action, drama, suspense... Unfortunately the parallel with Top Gun is so obvious that you can't help but making comparisons with Cruise's first blockbuster. Read for yourself: A young bright and talented man (Tom Cruise) wishing to graduate from the elite diving team of the Japanese coast guard (the US Top Gun pilots) undertake a demanding training. Forging himself throughout exercises, he befriend a young man whose good wills are not matched up by his physical condition (a sort of "Goose"). Helping him out, during the training he enters in conflict with another talented but unfriendly trainee (a typical "Iceman"). Until the death of the Japanese "Goose" (yes, in this movie too the poor, gentle but unadapted friend of the hero dies ), the hero will oscillate between resignation and pursuing his quest... You've already guess that he will finally make it through the training, partly thanks to the unraveling of the past history of his supervising officer, he will save the team, become friend with the Iceman... well, nothing new and exciting in other words! There are so many good movies coming out in Japan that I would not recommend people to loose time and money going to see it on the big screen... especially since, following again the Hollywood way of doing, they've made a TV series out of the movie. Actually, it never was more than a TV series to my opinion.

I assumed this film was Japanese remake of "Men of Honor" but this really wasn't like that and very refreshing youth movie about a man wishing to be a diver in a department of Japan coast guard. The story and visual expression is a bit typical Japanese and might be hard to understand some part of it for American viewers, but the main plot should be understandable. Through the group of young men living straight toward their dreams, you will recall how your youth hood is like and get inspired by their attitudes toward their bonds built in a group work of training. This may be also encouraging for the youth pursuing dreams to come true. Once you see it, you might feel like trusting in somebody again.
