This movie was so-so. It had it's moments, but wasn't the greatest.
View MoreKatee Sackhoff stars as Nikki, the girl in the title. After being out of prison for four months, she gathers three of her ex-lovers in a bar. She was found not guilty of killing her stalker, then boyfriend by reason of insanity. Her criminal lawyer and now fiancee Bert (William Baldwin) shows up with her. The characters are Zach (Seth Green) her first love. There is also Miranda (Michelle Trachtenberg) and Marvin (Harold Perrineau). Each of the her three former lovers represent one aspect of the title or Nikki's psyche. While they wait for her arrival, the three tell stories about how crazy and enchanting Nikki was in their lives. The stories barely held my interest, but I was drawn in by wanting to know where this film, with a jazz opening, was headed. The movie involves telling stories and playing head games at the table. It is more of a five man play. The film is clever and there are times when I think it is clever for the sake of being clever. This is for those who like a smart indy and "My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult."Parental Guide: F-bomb. Brief sex. No nudity.
View MoreThis is a good, well-plotted, well-acted ensemble piece. It gives the impression of having a decent writer on board – which is not that common an impression, these days. I can easily imagine it adapted as a stage play and do remember checking to see if it had originated from the stage. I was struck again by how good an actor Michelle Trachtenberg is – for years I've been seeing her give little bits of evidence that, were she only given roles to get her teeth into, she could build a really high reputation. Having said that, I really should not pick out any one of the five main actors. Each created really believable, 'screen-filling' characters and there was really good balance between them. There are subtle undercurrents: for example, watch the sub-surface rivalry and point-scoring between Zac (Seth Green) and Marvin (Harold Perrineau) – just facial expressions and body language, but made me chuckle repeatedly.Nikki (Katee Sackhoff) assembles four other characters, who turn out to be present or past lovers, for a get-together in a bar. The plot is the working out of what this charismatic and magnetic, scheming, and possibly dangerously insane character is up to, and how it fits into their shared histories - and it is enthralling. I suppose it's best called a comedy, but I could also call it a mystery‑thriller. I found fascinating the gradual working out of the individual back stories and how they feed into the equally gradual build-up to what she's been planning. The only thing that could improve it would be a bit more in the way of snappy dialogue – some memorable one-liners, perhaps – if only for the title character. This film sort of sneaked up on me. I watched it and quite liked it, felt I'd like to watch it again, so I did, and gradually, over repeating watchings, it has become one of my couple of dozen all-time favourites. I never get tired of it. It's sad that it seems to be so little known.
View MoreA group of guys are drawn to the same bar in downtown Los Angeles by an ex-girlfriend (Katee Sackhoff) they all have in common.I have to say my least favorite Buffy actor (Seth Green) is canceled out by my favorite one (Michelle Trachtenberg). Green is as obnoxious and terrible as ever, while Trachtenberg is performing on top of her game. Round it out with Billy Baldwin and Harold Perrineau ("Lost") and this is a solid cast of characters. This film is awesome to repeatedly reference My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, one of the greatest (overlooked) bands of the 1980s and 90s. And then actually playing it... wow. Never thought I would see that outside of a movie from Gregg Araki. (I do resent it being called "bubblegum", though.) A great first feature from director Shawn Piller, who had already made his name in television with "Dead Zone" and "Haven". Writer Scott Lew is also a "Dead Zone" alumnus. I look forward to their future endeavors.
View MoreThis movie is not a comedy. I agree with the thriller and drama classification. I didn't consider this a bad movie. I found the actors did a fine job of it, but the predictable plot it let down greatly. I also found this movie classified as science fiction in some other places. I was disappointed with their attempts of twists of the plot and found it bizarre how the characters interacted with each other. They seemed to almost become best friends only after knowing each other for minutes. This movie is neither science fiction nor is it a comedy. If your looking for a calm, predictable thriller to watch, this is the movie for you.
