True-crime writer Ellison Oswald is in a slump; he hasn't had a best seller in more than 10 years and is becoming increasingly desperate for a hit. So, when he discovers the existence of a snuff film showing the deaths of a family, he vows to solve the mystery. He moves his own family into the victims' home and gets to work. However, when old film footage and other clues hint at the presence of a supernatural force, Ellison learns that living in the house may be fatal.

Absolutely Fantastic

It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional

Watching it is like watching the spectacle of a class clown at their best: you laugh at their jokes, instigate their defiance, and "ooooh" when they get in trouble.

I love Japanese horror movies, so these movies are way tooo funny for people like me..can they at least present the ghosts as ghosts or nothing at all instead of those funny clown faces, lol, they could have made it better , the story was good but couldn't present it

This film is a watered down version of the hand held camera genre. In instances where they didn't use home video footage, they filmed the scene bad enough to make it feel like found footage. The movie opens showing us a family being hung in their back yard. True crime author Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke) moves into the same house with the intention of investigating the gruesome killing and writing about it. The locals are not warm to the idea, but we don't see any incidences due to budget constraints. Ellison doesn't inform his family they are in the same house that the killings took place. In the attic, Ellison discovers a horde of super 8 movies (some that have their own sound track, or so it seems) of the killing he is investigating as well as other killings that date back to the 1960's. He asks the questions, "Who is filming this?" and "Why?" and "Where is Stephanie?" She was the daughter of the family that was hung. They never found her.Ellison begins to investigate the other cases as weird things start to happen in the home. As usual it starts out slow and escalates.I liked the concept of the film more than its amateurish execution. Ellison drinks rather heavily which makes for an alternate explanation of his "hallucinations." The film would have been better if it had lead us in that direction, rather than just discuss it. Those who enjoy the "Paranormal" type movies should find a friend in this film. I loved the film in the beginning, but then it slowly wanes. Thumb rule: When you think demons are in your house, turn on the lights.Parental Guide: No f-bombs, sex. or nudity. Snuff films. . Should scare the kids during a sleepover at Trent Raznor's house.

There's only a few horror gems like this out there. The story, the characters, the creepy environment, the constant scares really made my day. There's not even a single moment in the movie where i was bored or had to say What the hell !! (In a negative way of course). The movie is so beautifully made that it will keep you on the verge of wanting more. Although wanting more doesn't mean you go ahead and watch Sinister 2 after this because the second part is very bad. Overall Sinister was a great.....wait.....an awesome movie experience.

Sinister was a very interesting film I love the plot and premise of the film. I bought this film recently cause I love the cover for the DVD and thank god I did. The movie was very original and the cast were good. There is one part that I did not like it when the boy is inside the box and starts yelling that was a let down and typical. Also I don't see why people are saying its a extremely scary film it not just because of the cheap jump scares gimmick well anything that jumps at you when your not looking is scary. Overall I love this film and it is a film worth re watching a lot.
