Will Proudfoot is a shy young boy and imaginative writer. His widower mother Mary (Jessica Hynes) is extremely religious. Their church pickets outside the theater showing Rambo's First Blood. On the other hand, Lee Carter is a ne'er-do-well pirating the movie inside the theater. The cigarette-smoking juvenile delinquent Lee Carter gets them both in trouble and lies to Will to get him working on his movie. Will rewrites the character as the son of Rambo. There are new French foreign exchange students and the English kids all fall for Didier Revol who soon gathers a cadre of followers. Lee gets suspended. Despite having girls lined up to kiss him, Didier is bored and gets Will to put him in the movie. There is a change in the power dynamic between Will and Lee.Lee Carter comes off as a real jerk for more than half of the movie. The two boys' relationship needs a bit more massaging. Lee needs to show more vulnerability at the beginning and a couple of touches of actual friendship with Will. It keeps the comedy from really elevating when I hate the lead character who is suppose to be appealing. There is an overall love of movie-making and a joy of a coming-of-age movie.

After I saw a trailer along with some really good reviews from so many places I decided that this is a definitely a movie to watch. It looks raw and seems like a really good independent movie that I always enjoy plus I always enjoy English humor. But after having seen it for myself I somehow find it pretty bland and pointless. It wasn't bad film but it wasn't good either.Synopsis: A story about two school boys with two different backgrounds joint together to make the home movie (where they were inspired from the movie First Blood) for the competition, along the way they met many obstacles that challenge their friendship. It took quite a long while before you will understand where the film is heading to, there are quite a few good moment in the film but the lack of substance in the story making this movie so empty and thus not really hold the interest well. It wasn't like it was predictable story but the flow of the film was pretty uneven and the character wasn't really standout (this might actually clash with other people idea, I believe).I believe the best of the film was the casting of the two main characters Will and Carter, and the kid did a good job portraying their character. Other actors also did pretty alright with their role specially the French kid, though I still not really see main purpose of his existence despite the fact he is one of the few main character and the one who cause the rift between Will and Carter and other student with his Mr. Popular status. His character hasn't done anything much. I also feel that Will imagination hasn't been express to the fullest in the film.Otherwise I thought everything was pretty alright, the film do consist of blend in score (though sometime feel really strange), nice location, good dialogue, neat wardrobe and so on. Not much has been emphasize that the film took place in the '80 but just the few accessories, few words and wardrobe of the French kid that dress like Boy George and Cyndi Lauper combine and that seem like the trendiest thing then. All in all, I can't really fully recommend this movie to anyone – first if you're not into this type of movie you will surely bored and - second if you do actually like to watch independence film this still is not really that good, cause this isn't much of story driven. All I can recommend was if you still want to watch it catch it on free cable or rent it from DVD store.Reason to Watch: Will and Carter are lovable character.Reason to Watch: Not really hold interest.Rating: 5/10 (Grade: D+) PS: They do explain why the film spell Rambow with "W" inside the film at the end of the credit.

Son of Rambow was an extreme surprise to me. I loved it on so many levels. It brings back nostalgia and makes me feel like a kid again because I have always been fascinated with video cameras and I've always loved to make little homemade movies. Exploring and making a world for myself has also been a big part of me. Will has an incredible imagination and runs wild with ideas and creations of his own and makes the world his own little masterpiece. He befriends a troublemaker, Lee Carter, and they decide to make a movie together. People who want to see some big blockbuster CGI movie should stay away from this one, this is a movie all about creating your own adventures and stories. It's about the passion of movies. This movie, on a personal level, is one of my favorites. It's extremely touching and sentimental, and to tell the truth, I was teary eyed at the end. It brought back some fond memories of my childhood and I will always hold this movie near my heart. Perfect for anybody who wants to feel like a kid again.

When you're making an indie film, you're always looking for ways to save money. And if you're smart the first and foremost place to do that is in the script. One great strategy is to make a virtue of having no money - the old turn-lemons-into-lemonade trick. You know you can't compete with the big budget pictures on production values. So you come up with a story that relies on amateur video. This was the main technique used by sex, lies and videotape, generally considered the beginning of the modern indie film movement in the US. And it was used in The Blair Witch Project, one of the highest grossing indie films of all time. It's also used to great effect in Son of Rambow.Of course, this strategy won't mean a thing if your story is not well structured. Ironically, script is even more important in indie film-making than in big budget movies, because the script is usually all you have going for you. And it doesn't cost any more to write a good one. Son of Rambow is a love story between two young friends, and writer Garth Jennings came up with a structure that not only carries a lot of comedy, it packs a surprising amount of emotional impact.Like most good love stories, Son of Rambow is based on the fundamental opposition of the odd couple. Here a delinquent schemer and religious straight arrow team up to make a First Blood sequel where the son of Rambo tries to save his father. Matching the concept to the personal weakness and need of the leads, both boys are missing a father at home. The odd couple sets up the main opposition, but the similar need sets up the emotional payoff at the end.But the key structural decision the writer made in this film has to do with the desire line. The normal desire in a love story is for the characters to want each other. But using the normal structure for these characters would have meant no plot and a sticky sentimental mess. Instead, these boys want to make a movie that will win a short film contest. Notice that this external goal allows the writer to sneak up on the audience, to tell a love story where the payoff is a complete surprise. One of the big problems a lot of love stories have is lack of plot. That's also the case here. The desire, though effective at setting up the final punch, does flag a bit since it is essentially a stall. To increase the plot in the slow middle of the story, the writer adds outside opponents from each boy's family, along with the older kids at school. This character web is not altogether successful, especially the cool French boy that all the English kids worship. But it does complicate the making of the video enough to justify waiting so long to find out who wins the award. In the Love Story Class, I talk a lot about how to transcend the form, by twisting the beats so the story pays its dues but also gives the audience something new. Writer Garth Jennings has come up with a unique love story structure through which to express the joys of friendship and the power of the imagination.FOR MORE REVIEWS, please visit www.truby.com
