Frank Corvin, ‘Hawk’ Hawkins, Jerry O'Neill and ‘Tank’ Sullivan were hotdog members of Project Daedalus, the Air Force's test program for space travel, but their hopes were dashed in 1958 with the formation of NASA and the use of trained chimps. They blackmail their way into orbit when Russia's mysterious ‘Ikon’ communications satellite's orbit begins to degrade and threatens to crash to Earth.

This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.

Mostly, the movie is committed to the value of a good time.

In 1958 four Air Force test pilots, Frank(Clint Eastwood),Hawk(Tommy Lee Jones), Jerry( Donald Sutherland), and Tank would test jets to the limit. They are Team Daedalus always pushing the limits, and hopping one day be the first ones on the moon. One day Hawk along with Frank push a jet too hard and they have to bail from the air craft. Frank and Hawk parachute out and the jet crashes. Frank and Hawk report to Major Gersion office( James Cromwell), to explain why they crashed a four million dollar jet. After the brief Gersion has Frank come to a press conference. The big news is that the Air Force Test program will be handed over to a new agency NASA( National Aeronautical Space Administration). They will be taking over everything, and will be sending the 1st in to space. Meet Mary Ann, an ape, she will be the first to orbit around Earth. When Frank is introduced to her he is P****D off. He will never forget this day and never forgive Gersion. It is forty years later, Johnson Space Center, Houston TX. NASA has discovered a problem with a fourteen year old Russian Satellite. It is going to crash soon, and they need help finding the person who designed the guidance system. The problem is that this guidance system pre-date micro-processors, it old. Sara(Marcia Gay Harden), is an engineer with NASA, and she has to find out who is responsible before it crashes. Gersion tells her, so she and Ethan(Loren Dean) who is an astronaut find Frank. When they arrive at Franks home they explain the situation. Frank finds out that his guidance system made it's way on a Russian Satellite during the Cold War, he flips. He is shocked and wonders how it got on there is the first place; but no one knows. At first he refuses to help, he asks them both to leave; especially Ethan. Later on Frank re-thinks it, and eventually helps out. When he shows up in Gersons office, who has an Administration Job with NASA. Frank and Gersion go back and forth, arguing. The only way Frank will help out is if Gersion sends up the original Team Daedalus. Gersion is reluctant ; but knows Frank is is only hope.Frank is on is way to round up his team; and quickly. Jerry, who now is a structural engineer who deigns roller coasters. Tank is now a Baptist preacher, who jumps at the chance. Then the toughest is Hawk who now is a crop duster. Hawk and Frank haven't talked in forever so Frank knows this will be tough. Hawk is a no go; but to Franks surprise shows up with the rest at a road side diner. When Team Daedalus show up at Johnson Space Center they meet Gene(William Devane) the flight director. He tells them they must meet the same requirements the other astronauts do. If He finds out Franks team isn't cutting it mentally or physically the plug gets pulled. It is also required that they take two of the top astronauts, come mission time Ethan and Roger( Courtney B. Vance). Team Daedalus begins the training, during this relationships form and Hawk gets some unexpected news before the mission. When the mission comes to retrieve the satellite; the team finally gets their chance to go to space. Once there the team notices the satellite and it's huge. Frank doesn't like the look of it and it doesn't look like an ordinary satellite. When they attempt to get close to it, the satellite has a target system on it. It starts to defend itself, thinking the space shuttle is a bogie. When the team along with Ethan go to investigate it they realize this satellite is armed with nuclear warheads. They return to the shuttle inform Gene and tell him what is going on. While this is going on Ethan goes out unnoticed, arms the satellite. Frank and Hawk go after him to stop him from doing something stupid. It's too late, the satellite is armed and it will crash into Earth unless something is done. A quick plan comes up; and at first it's a big NO. They finally realize this plan is the only way to stop a catastrophe. In the end it was successful; but costly for one in the end.I love this movie, serious actors in a comedy . I loved the story, the relationships that form with all the characters; and the excitement near the end . This film will definitely put a smile on your face; and warmth in your heart. THX, Kris L. In 1958, 'Hawk' Hawkins crashes the test plane while recklessly breaking the altitude record almost killing himself and Frank Corvin. Manager Bob Gerson takes away the guys' space mission and replace them with a chimpanzee. In the present day, a Russian satellite is going off course. NASA would rather let it fall but the Russians want it fixed. Bob Gerson (James Cromwell) is the project manager eager to fix it for political reasons. The guidance system is ancient and is a copy of one written by Frank Corvin (Clint Eastwood). He tells Gerson to send up Team Dædalus which is himself, Hawk (Tommy Lee Jones), Jerry O'Neill (Donald Sutherland) and Tank Sullivan (James Garner). There is something underhanded about the Russian having US tech during the Cold War and Gerson has no intention of letting the geezers into space. There are some old people jokes but the movie is not as jokey as one would expect. Surprisingly, the four guys don't get the "I'm too old for this s***" line. It's great to see these old guys together. I was hoping for snappier dialog and sharper exchanges. The comedy could be much better. The story is pretty preposterous. There are lots of things that struck me the wrong way. The action seems to be halfway between the realism of Apollo 13 and the wild action of a Michael Bay movie. It has some exciting CGI moments but it's always tinged with a good handful of manufactured fiction. Two human interaction scenes seem wrong to me. First, I don't understand why Hawk is the one who rides the rocket to the moon. It seems that he's the crazy reckless pilot that's needed to land the shuttle. Frank is much more reasonable to be sent to the moon. Second, I don't understand how Gerson isn't arrested for allowing technology to slip to the Russians. Quite frankly, he can't guarantee that he isn't actually a Russian agent. And I won't mention all the crazy space maneuvers.

The story is so Clint Eastwood in nature, especially so when he is playing a role himself in it. It has the elements of old characters, military backgrounds, culture clashes, and some funny moments here and there. The movie nicely builds up the story at the first act for the first hour, being funny at every culture clash and pride of older generation meeting the younger people. But I feel that the second act's surprise twist, although very much predictable from the presence of the Russian general early on, is really unnecessary. The twist puts the focus to a shift from a somewhat funny story of old people to a story of doubted old people saving the world. The acting is a really great job in overall. Having Clint Eastwood at the lead role is a great choice for this kind of character background. Putting Tommy Lee Jones at his side builds up the story and character relations even better. The presence of Donald Sutherland and James Garner adds the complete angles for the character diversity. Ultimately having Marcia Gay Harden, James Cromwell and William Devane completes the story.

SPACE COWBOYSI thought this movie was a lot of fun.The movie is about a group of retired engineers who were due to go into space when they were young, but was replaced by a monkey. Now they are pensioners and they have been called to rescue a satellite that is heading towards Earth. Finally, they get to go into space. The movie had some really funny moments. The story was really good and even though this is a comedy, it also had some serious moments. The movie stars Clint Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland & James Garner. The casting was brilliant. They seemed to have a great relationship and their connection was brilliant. My favourite character was Jerry, played by Donald Sutherland. He was so funny... blind as a bat, but always flirting with the girls that were half his age. He made me laugh.Right at the beginning if the movie, you saw the characters when they were young. Everyone dubbed their voices over these younger actors so that you could believe it was their younger selves... it was really well done. Toby Stephens played a young Clint Eastwood... and I have to say he did a fantastic job. The fake mole on his face looked terrible, but his facial expressions were spot on. He actually looked like a young Clint. The effects were not always great, but i think in this film that made it all the better. I loved it when they got to space and the views and landscapes were lovely.I also really liked the ending... it was a good finish.I will give this film 7 out of 10.A lot of fun to watch and it looked like everyone had a good time making this film.
