n my opinion it was a great movie with some interesting elements, even though having some plot holes and the ending probably was just too messy and crammed together, but still fun to watch and not your casual movie that is similar to all other ones.
View MoreIt's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
View MoreThis movie feels like it was made purely to piss off people who want good shows
View MoreThere's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.
View MoreOriginally this was supposed to be the third part in the Demons series, but director Michele Soavi wanted this film to stand alone and be its own film. In doing so Soavi did create a vivid, very well-made Italian horror film from the late 80s. In the 12th century a church is built on top of a burial ground. The people within this burial ground were thought to be possessed and worship Satan. Cut to modern times and a librarian at this church is investigating the mystery surrounding the church. Unknowingly evil is brought forth and must be dealt with. Co-written by Dario Argento (who also produced), Franco Ferrini, Soavi and an uncredited Lamberto Bava (who directed Demons 1 & 2). Has some pretty good music by Goblin, Keith Emerson and Philip Glass. Also starring a young Asia Argento. It was good and do recommend it, and I admit I have only seen this film once, but at times it wasn't what I was expecting. But some times that can be a good thing. When in other horror movies the gore was to be brought on, in this film Soavi instead at times brings some really great images. Not saying this isn't a gory horror film, because there is one scene in particular where the character removes their own heart, but it isn't in the conversation of gore like say the film Demons is. Now as well when you have those talents all working together I still was wanting and expecting something better. Perhaps after watching this film a few more times it may shape into that, but after an initial viewing I give it a 6 out of 10.
View MoreFor fans of The Witch, this will be another fantastic piece. While there are slight issues with continuity and motivation of some parts of the plot, this film offers mystery, action gore (even if a bit outdated), and wonderful composition, all while developing a narrative that pulls you in and invests in the well earned climax. The artistry is absolutely the best when it comes to the beauty of the shots and the musical score which lends heavily to the mood. The subplots seem to be disjointed and I can't honestly say they all finally join in a way that'll satisfy everyone, but they definitely add up in an overall world building/background developing kind of way, especially with some of the more subversive undertones for those who appreciate the slightly deeper meaning to some of the parts.A few of the characters are one note, and you kind of wonder if you'd be better than them in the same situation, but it doesn't hamper the film and they work together relatively well.Bottom line? Not a scary film, but somewhat creepy and blossoming with macabre beauty.
View MoreA church built on the site of a medieval massacre is being restored. The Teutonic Knights had killed all the villagers for mere suggestions of demonic spirits. New librarian Evan and Lisa uncover a piece of parchment. As Evan digs, he gets possessed by something buried underneath. Lotte is a young girl interested in their work with the catacombs. Her father Hermann also gets possessed. An ancient alarm is activated and the doors to the church are locked trapping a tour group of children and a wedding photo shoot. There are lots of interesting visual concepts. The plot is a mess. It meanders without tension. There is nothing scary about this horror but it is compelling visually. Someone should work out simple expositions to explain the story. I am willing to excuse some of it as translation problems.
View MoreComing from the World of Dario Argento, Lamberto Bava and other Italian Filmmakers, Director Michele Soavi has a Minor Following and after Seeing this, one can See Why. Visual Flares are Forever Impressing the Viewer to keep the Confusing and Plodding Plot from becoming a Deadening Distraction. The Camera work is as Stunning as the Sets and its Gothic, Demon Possessed Template is Haunting and Captivates. The Film is Stretched somewhat and Feels a little Long, but the Atmosphere and Odd Feel of the Film Continues right up to the Final Shot.Muddled as the Story may be, there is Enough here to Interest Horror Movie Fans, Especially ones Drawn to the Italian Horror Renaissance of the 1960-1990 Period from Mario Bava, Argento, Lamberto Bava and Others. The European Flavor and Baroque, Beautiful Style that these Movies are well Known is Evident as the Film is Rich and Lush with Grotesque Architecture and Bloody Brutality. The Characterizations may be Thin and the Story Hard to Follow at times, the Movie is Never Visually Boring or Lacking in Stylized Hauntings and Killings. A Young and Lolita Like Asia Argento has a Strong Leading Role and the Score is Fiddled About by Goblin, Keith Emerson, and Philip Glass. Some of the Make-Up and Creatures are Hypnotic and Horrific.Overall, Could be Considered Slow to Start after the Ancient Flashback, but not really, a Must Watch for Fangoria Types and Anyone Interested in Foreign Horror. This Odd and at times Fascinating Film is Superbly Stylistic and Deep in Religious (especially Catholic) Symbolism and Lore.
