In this case, of the fourth kind, the cinematic premise that for the viewer will be more credible a fiction that is presented as a documentary than a fiction properly said, seems to fail from the first moment. For the facts are so horrendous and the horror story works so well on its own, that the documentary elements are superfluous; to present the facts as based on actual facts only devalues the story. As for Milla Jovovich, she was probably supposed to look like an actress as bad as those working on this kind of midnight documentary, or really her lack of fright is not fake. But again, any kind of mediocrity could be intentional, to reproduce the docudrama in the most faithful way to its televising reality. The important thing here is that, in the end, beyond all mistakes, the horror tale and its premises, even the psychological drama, are interesting. For what we see is not a direct representation of horror, but rather a shadow of it. And this shadow never reveals itself at all, letting the imagination of the spectator immerse itself in its own horrors. And here, it will then be this spectator, who must extract the supposed reality of fiction, or rather, the true horror of the feigned reality. In short, a good movie, with some conceptual flaws, which however, do not ruin the story.

I watched this three or four years ago and it TERRIFIED me. I was never scared of owls or aliens until watching this movie, but I had trouble sleeping after this. I'm embarrassed to admit that it completely fooled me and I thought the audio recordings and video reenacted in the movie were real. Of course, I felt stupid and kind of disappointed when I found out that they were fake, but after re-watching this today... I actually still enjoyed it. It's definitely got a legitimately creepy vibe to it, whether you believe it's real or not. And Milla Jovovich's performance was pretty darn good.

The Fourth Kind (2009): Dir: Olatunde Osansanmi / Cast: Milla Jovovich, Elias Koteas, Will Patton, Corey Johnson, Charlotte Milchard: Supposedly based on actual ominous cases and disappearances in Alaska. What the fourth kind is isn't clear. Are the first three kinds male, female and animal? Just asking, that's all. Dr. Emily Tyler witnessed the murder of her husband by unseen forces. Director Olatunde Osansanmi presents this in documentary form mixed with shock moments of possession that viewers may not buy. Apparently when snowy owls perch just outside your window, it indicates an encounter with another life form. Milla Jovovich plays Dr. Tyler whose hypnosis open horrors and eventual separation from her children. Elias Koteas is flat as her psychiatrist. He does little more than reassure her sanity and assist her in dealing with accusations that point her as guilty. Will Patton plays Sheriff August who grows fearful and impatient particularly when cops watching the residents are found dead. Corey Johnson plays a patient under guidance by Tyler. He will allow himself to be hypnotized but eventually his trauma leads to murder suicide. Charlotte Milchard makes an appearance as the real version of the Jovovich character. Well made film that draws heavily on supposed unexplained events that go unanswered. It toys with claims that never convince yet it catches our imagination. Score: 6 / 10
