Don't listen to the Hype. It's awful
The film was still a fun one that will make you laugh and have you leaving the theater feeling like you just stole something valuable and got away with it.
View MoreIt's hard to see any effort in the film. There's no comedy to speak of, no real drama and, worst of all.
View MoreI didn’t really have many expectations going into the movie (good or bad), but I actually really enjoyed it. I really liked the characters and the banter between them.
View MoreReleased the same year as "2001: A Space Odyssey" this US/Japan co-production is embarrassingly dated and ridiculously campy compared to that Stanley Kubric classic. Directed by Kinji Fukasaku, who at this same time was directing some excellent, very tough Yakuza films and who'd later go on to direct the cult classic "Battle Royale," but this film lacks those films production values and most importantly a decent script. The set up for "The Green Slime" isn't all that bad. A giant asteroid is headed towards earth so a gigantic spaceship is sent out to intercept it. What ends up happening after they blow it up is the space adventurers inadvertently bring back the titular slime, which then mutates into some embarrassingly stupid looking one-eyed tentacled creatures. On the positive side, I did enjoy the colorful 1960s production design, which had a nicely campy Mad Men feel. I also found Fukasaku's overuse of dramatic zooms entertainingly goofy, adding to the film's camp value. Overall this is a terrible film that can only be enjoyed on a so-bad-it's-good level of entertainment, which did entertain me.
View MoreReleased the very year when "2001" revolutionized sci fi ,"the green slime" looks like a comic strip, sometimes involuntarily very funny, notably in the sequence of the attack on the infirmary. The special effects ,particularly the rubber creatures ,are priceless and the rockets ,the launching ramps and the orbital station look like toys .In its way ,the first part is an "Armageddon" (1998) in miniature whereas the second one predates "alien " (1979) ,its sequels and its countless imitators. The two astronauts ,with diametrically opposite characters but good friends in the end ,vying with each other for the doctor's love ,will return in too many thrillers ,as far as the detectives are concerned .They must be forgiven ,because the physician is none other than the gorgeous Lucianna Paluzzi who played Fiona Volpe ,my favorite villainess in the Bond saga .I must confess I watched the flick because she was in it.
View MoreSci-fi movies don't age well. What was plausible only a few decades ago seems funny now (can you imagine the mass hysteria that was caused by a radio broadcast of "war of the worlds" today?). So if you want to watch this movie be sure to let go of your 21st century knowledge and view it like it's 1968. If you want to know about it's looks and feel just imagine the thunder birds with real people and... GREEN SLIME!It's a fun movie that shows what the 60's where about. The women are sexy and can do little more then scream and look helpless. The men are all robust and react without fear. People are confident in the future of space travel and believe it is only a matter of time before many manned space stations will be in earth's orbit. And unfortunately it also shows that the apartheid was not over yet as shown by the all-white crew.
View More*Spoiler/plot- 1968. Green Slime- The Day of the Triffids in outer space. The Earth is first saved from a green slime covered meteor strike. But then is threatened by green slime creatures transfered onto the orbiting space station through astronaut carelessness. Green slime creature are strictly crappy rubber monster suit cheesiness. These rubber suited monsters absorb electrical power and kill like electric eels. Al this is very very Japanesemind set. *Special stars-Robert Horton is easily recognized for his Soup Star rugged leading man good looks that his one dimensional commander character is a strutting Dudley Do-Right. Richard Jaeckel, a movie favorite character actor is the rival. *Theme- The simplistic theme of rivalry between male military buddies interested in the same women is shown. *Based on- Nothing major. Main music theme is bouncy and pure 60's. *Trivia/location/goofs- Produced at the same MGM studio that borough us the same HUGE film, 2001. Hard to believe. *Emotion- Strangely enjoyable, for a minor forgettable film.
