Henry Fleming is a young Union soldier in the American Civil War. During his unit's first engagement, Henry flees the battlefield in fear. When he learns that the Union actually won the battle, shame over his cowardice leads him to lie to his friend Tom and the other soldiers, saying that he had been injured in battle. However, when he learns that his unit will be leading a charge against the enemy, Henry takes the opportunity to face his fears and redeem himself.

What a freaking movie. So many twists and turns. Absolutely intense from start to finish.

It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.

This adaptation of Crane's story about a both a soldier's struggle and triumph is a timeless message that speaks to generations well ahead of its time. The relevance of the theme can still be seen today , roughly 60 years after production date and 150 years after the actual war. The acting was superb in most areas (except for battle scenes but granted special effects were not present), only further conveying the story line and the true horror that faced these soldiers every day. There truly was no glory for them until well after the triumph, and even then the generals would receive the credit anyhow. Audie Murphy performed no less than perfect portrayal of such a soldier under these exact circumstances. All around a great film.

One of the best movies I've ever seen! It showed true faith in troubling times, and shows how someone can come from running away to a true figure of courage! I totally recommend this movie to anyone! It really showed me what it takes to rise and overcome your fears

THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE has some of the best battle scenes ever put on film. It is almost beautiful to see those explosions across the pristine American landscape in pure daylight. The film is about the nature of fear and bravery in war. It is not too big on character development, in fact, the film is only about 69 minutes long. The actions of the main character reminded me of this quote by Celine: "Laziness is almost as compelling as life. The new farce you're having to play crushes you with its banality, and all in all it takes more cowardice than courage to start all over again." The narrator could have been done away with. but this is a great John Huston film. Now i am really curious about the book by STEPHEN CRANE.(8/10)

Civil War film based on the famed novel by Stephen Crane. It gets short shrift among John Huston's films because it's well known that Louis B. Mayer cut 26 minutes out of the film while Huston was away filming The African Queen. Still, what's left is hardly incoherent and works beautifully. It may have been a masterpiece in its 95 minute incarnation, but it's still great and one of Huston's best films in its 69 minute form. Audie Murphy stars as a young private facing his first fighting. The real value of this film is how it really feels like it's right there on the front lines of Civil War battles. It's vivid and frightening, and also quite gorgeously directed and shot. I perhaps would have liked to hear no narration, which comes directly from Crane's novel (and may or may not have been wanted by Huston). It's mostly unnecessary. It may have been confusing without it, but only as confusing as it is for the characters on screen.
