It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional
View MoreA great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
View MoreIt is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
View MoreI think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
View MoreI saw this way back on a VHS in the late 80s. Revisited it recently on a DVD. The effects still looks good. The gore effects is terrific. Arms get ripped off, heads get bashed together until the skulls burst open, and guts get ripped out from people's stomachs. Ther r two scenes that involve a head being crushed. The first one is that of a child on a bicycle n i found it to b offensive n repulsive. The other scene takes place inside the health club. This scene was shot way before the one in Final destination - gym scene. The plot is about a weakling janitor who is harassed by sadistic gym goers. In one harassment the janitor jumps out from the window n lands himself in a drum full of toxic waste. Later the janitor turns into a strong n hulk like deformed freak who fights off the evil men. The guy who played the janitor is hilarious with his pathetic facial expressions.
View More"The Toxic Avenger" is an odd case where I cannot give the film a vote. After all, in so many ways it's a terrible movie...with horrible acting, an insane story and more ways to offend people than many of John Waters' films! But, at the same time, the film never tries to be anything else. It's a bad movie and clearly WANTS to be a bad movie...which make it pretty unique. In the hellishly awful town of Tromaville, punks, bullies and sociopaths seem to be everywhere. You'll see these folks, for kicks, say a LOT of politically incorrect things, attempt to rape a blind girl AFTER they shotgun her seeing eye dog and run amok deliberately running over children...and then backing up over their heads to make sure they're dead...and it's pretty grisly. Therefore it's NOT a film for kids or anyone with taste..or anyone who doesn't want to see guys kicked in the crotch again and again and again. However, when poor Melvin is bullied, he ends up falling into some conveniently located open radioactive waste barrels...and he becomes the Toxic Avenger. Again and again, he confronts these scum-bags and kills or maims them...and becomes a very strange super-hero in the process! The bottom line is that for bad film junkies and folks who want a laugh and don't mind all the super-offensive story elements, then by all means watch it. It's not a film to show your mother or Father O'Malley! The film, by the way, is kind of like the play "Toxic Avenger" but is also quite different. Both are tacky and fun, however.
View MoreJust 13 minutes into the movie I had to tell myself, "this one of the funniest movies I've ever seen." They make the best out of Melvin in just those few minutes, who is a nerdy janitor for a gym in the town. There are several very gruesome scenes in the movie (there is a warning message before the film), which usually I would really like but not all the scenes are in the context I'd like to see. The gore is very high quality for its time, but some scenes I just couldn't appreciate. For example, there is a scene where two young men begin to help an old woman out of her car, asking if they can help with her groceries, and she replies in such a convincing voice "oh, you sure can... it's nice to have boys like you in the neighborhood". They proceed to punch her in the stomach and then beat her and take her car. But most of the gore scenes fall into the Toxic Avenger killing the criminals of the town, and some of the scenes were actually quite funny.Don't let this turn you off, because seriously, it is a very enjoyable movie. You'll be laughing hard out loud, but there'll be some scenes that stop you and you won't know how you should react.
View MoreTromaville has a monstrous new hero. The Toxic Avenger is born when mop boy Melvin Junko (Mark Torgl) falls into a vat of toxic waste. Now evildoers will have a lot to lose."The Toxic Avenger" is the very definition of the so-bad-it's-good movie, and really, so is much of what Troma produced in the 1980s. Over-the-top acting and characters, but always done tongue-in-cheek, you cannot help but laugh at the film, even when it is utterly disturbing.Lloyd Kaufman and his crew were never afraid to pull the punches. Unfortunately for them, bad cinema has caught with them and their latest releases are not as edgy as their earlier endeavors. Running over a kid's head? Pointing a shotgun at a baby? Very edgy in 1984, but in 2015 it no longer is (no doubt due to independent filmmakers now trying to one-up Troma!).
