What a waste of my time!!!
Better Late Then Never
The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
View MoreThe movie is made so realistic it has a lot of that WoW feeling at the right moments and never tooo over the top. the suspense is done so well and the emotion is felt. Very well put together with the music and all.
View MoreStirring WWII film, directed by John Ford, about the contributions of the Navy torpedo boat squadron to the war effort. In addition to the action and wartime heroics, there are subplots about the rivalry between Navy lieutenant Robert Montgomery and frustrated subordinate John Wayne, and a romance that blossoms between Wayne and nurse Donna Reed.Montgomery, a gleeful ham when the role calls for it, offers one of his most subtle and successful performances as the sober squadron commander. Wayne does a great job, as well, playing a character with more layers to him than just a gung-ho war hero. His character is brave, to be sure, but he's also ambitious to rise in rank and a little petulant. Not attributes one immediately thinks of when they think John Wayne. Reed is lovely and charming as ever. It's a little overlong, as many movies over two hours seem to be (then and especially now), but Ford makes the most of it and it never feels padded. Definitely worth a look for Ford and Wayne fans, or anyone who enjoys World War II films. It's one of the best.
View MoreThis movie is fairly accurate for what happened back then. Robert Montgomery plays the PT boat commander and is an actual serviceman from the war. John Wayne is his exec, a little bit hyper and inexperienced. The Pt boats are used basically as messenger boats by the brass. they just don't understand how to use them properly. As the movie progresses the crew is eventually beached and must go their separate ways. They do try to get the boat fixed at a remote facility run by an old man. As the Japs close in you can hear some gunfire but don't see what happens. At the end John Wayne and Robert Montgomery both get out on the last plane out of the area because of their PT boat experiences.
View MoreThis is a great character study of those who were basically in the wrong place at the wrong time. It's all about a PT Boat squadron in the South Pacific at the outbreak of WWII. John Wayne, Robert Montgomery and Donna Reed head a great cast in this moving drama. This is about what war can do to people lives, people like you and me and the drastic decisions that have to be made in order to survive. It's about the military chain of command and what it's like to be near the bottom of that chain. Finally it has everything to do with how terrible war is and the ultimate price that must be paid for freedom. The Duke, as always, leads the charge while Ward Bond and the usual John Wayne crew fill in the balance of the story. Then of course there is Donna Reed, the Duke's love interest. She is beautiful, strong willed and a reminder that even in war everyone is expendable. This is without a doubt a great movie.
View MoreOne has to remember the time that this film was released-1945--so there is quite a bit of flag waving here . Especially with the attacks on the Japanese "cruisers " and sinking of a light Japanese aircraft carrier .No Japanese naval ships were indeed lost during this period , only 3 destroyers sunk by US submarines .As well when the PT boats were on their torpedo runs I am quite sure the Japanese ships were out of range of the machine guns firing from the PT boats.Indeed a summary of Japanese naval actions in this period list the cruiser Kuma (One torpedo struck bow but did not explode) South of Cebu 9 Apr 1942 by PT boats .The acting is understated which does work well.AS well the attacks of the Japanese aircraft is quite realistic no CGI here .The fall of the Philippines is indeed a fascinating subject .The mistakes, bravery, and suffering of the allied forces deserves a modern treatment -now that most of the facts are known .Hoping that film will be made.
