As somebody who had not heard any of this before, it became a curious phenomenon to sit and watch a film and slowly have the realities begin to click into place.
View MoreThe movie's not perfect, but it sticks the landing of its message. It was engaging - thrilling at times - and I personally thought it was a great time.
View MoreAmazing worth wacthing. So good. Biased but well made with many good points.
View MoreThere are moments that feel comical, some horrific, and some downright inspiring but the tonal shifts hardly matter as the end results come to a film that's perfect for this time.
View MoreWell, I happened to wake up around 2 in the morning (long story) and caught Blood Angels a little less than halfway into the movie. It sounded cool (albeit too good to be true), so I read the summary. I expected it to be fairly cheesy.I wasn't disappointed. It was.... Cheez-Nip cheesy. Which is to say not-really-but-still-somewhat cheesy. (Anyone who's ever eaten a Cheez-Nip will understand.)However, it wasn't altogether intolerable. The Asian DJ was really funny (was he the one who played Roy in The Perfect Score?), and the girls were gorgeous. (Of course. Who'd watch a vampire movie with ugly chicks?) I like the whole grrrl-vampire team thing. Makes me feel adventurous. But that couldn't make me ignore the tragic quality of the special effects. When will they learn that if you're gonna make fake blood using CGs, it's not supposed to look radioactive? I hate it when they have that lava-lamp-looking orangey fake-tastic blood. Guess what? That's what they used. WHY??Also, if you rip out a guy's spine, he most likely will not look at you in horror for a few seconds before falling down.So anyway, the plot was fairly simple, and the acting was so-so. I liked how Jones was evil, but not SO evil that it was annoying. He was really funny at the end, actually. That was a pleasant surprise and a relief. And his voice was kinda cool.Oh, but one thing: if you receive the blood of 2 half-vampires, that doesn't necessarily make you a WHOLE vampire. It just makes you.... more half-vampire. Quality over quantity, right? Ah well.Overall, the movie wasn't spectacular, and the content was a little naughty for my conservative tastes, but it was pretty fun to watch.Yo.(....You get that if you saw the movie, see? :D)
View MoreAshley meets her sister in the dead of night at the bus depot. Right away she is almost attacked by a group of hoodlums that sis is able to dispatch without as much as a drop of sweat. Ashley is escaping her traumatic past to live with her sister who happens to run a rave with a bunch of her bodacious lady friends. These girls have got it all .brains, looks, a killer job and oh did I mention they were vampires? Well not exactly vampires but 'thralls' half human, half vampire and the whole lot of them are hiding from their ex-master. Mr. Jones (Lorenzo Lamas) will stop at nothing to get his girls back or is he up to something more sinister? Well I had passed this one by once or twice but I'm glad I reconsidered. "Blood Angels' (aka Thralls) on the surface does appear to be yet another batch of the same old thing. But the film is surprisingly fun and has energy. The director did a good job with what he had. The action scenes pop pretty well and the lovely ladies chew up the screen. True the script is clichéd and the one-liners are real groaners at times, not to mention the digital effects sometimes are a bit weak. But I had fun in the end and with a film like 'Blood Angels' that's all one can hope for.
View More*SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT*A bunch of hot vampire, (Thralls if you want to get technical), women open a nightclub. They are trying to escape the clutches of vampire master Lamas. A sister of one of the vamps shows up. She is ignorant of their vampire ways. Soon she will get a lesson in how to be a successful Thrall and how to waste a beautiful B-movie concept.Speaking as a B-movie lover, I'm outraged at this film. I don't say that lightly. What a waste. You have a bar full of hot vampire chicks and not one of them gets naked? Come on! OK. OK. The DJ flashes her breasts to expose some sort of snake like monster. But they used a body double for the DJ. No way was that her breasts. The cover of the DVD has five or six babes in scantily clad lingerie and the tag line is "Being wild is in their blood." Yeah whatever. When you have more topless guys than girls, you know that the filmmakers don't have a clue as to who will be watching their movie. "Blood Angels" had the potential to be a great exploitation flick but instead went down a very mundane path to B-movie oblivion. To be fair, "Blood Angels" is not a horribly-made flick. You won't want to rip your eyes out while watching it. But it's another classic case of the bait and switch tactic that B-movie filmmakers cherish. You think you're renting a naughty vampire movie but instead are stuck with a Thrall empowerment flick. They are going to show that evil man that he's not in control of them. *Sigh* Wasteful. Sad. Tragic.
View MoreOne of the common complaints in this country is that we tend to make oblique films, weird films, deliberately shocking films and boring drawing room pieces. I have often felt that Canadians should make more accessible films in addition to our trademark films sensitively or insensitively tackling subjects about necrophilia, auto-erotica, sexual abuse, magical lesbians, suicidal gay males and the assorted, at times inexplicably disturbing subject matter of David Cronenberg. Unfortunately, when Canadians try to make films that reach a broader audience what we often get are films like "Men with Brooms" that try too hard to be an accessible, popular 'Canadian' film. We also get films like "Thralls" that try hard to be American, but fail horrifically. A film like "Thralls" always feels like a low grade Canadian film. Low grade American films feel different, less amateurish even. If you are tempted to watch this for some of the babes listed in the cast (like Leah Cairns, who I hope becomes part of the regular Battlestar Galactica cast as Racetrack)take a chance on something else they have been in, chances are it will be more worth your while.
