What a waste of my time!!!
Most undeservingly overhyped movie of all time??
Tells a fascinating and unsettling true story, and does so well, without pretending to have all the answers.
View MoreIf you're interested in the topic at hand, you should just watch it and judge yourself because the reviews have gone very biased by people that didn't even watch it and just hate (or love) the creator. I liked it, it was well written, narrated, and directed and it was about a topic that interests me.
View MoreA SOUPCON OF SUSPICION.I gather this is a remake of a French film. That usually spells disaster, as in "Wages of Fear." In this case, it holds together pretty well, although I make that judgment without having seen the French original.Morgan Freeman is a captain in the police force in Puerto Rico and Gene Hackman is a very wealthy tax lawyer and celebrity. Hackman is wearing a tux and accompanying his incandescently beautiful trophy wife, Monica Bellucci, to a charity fund raiser when he is notified that Freeman wants to see him for "a ten minute chat" about some "irregularities" in the story he told police about having discovered the dead body of a pretty little girl. The interview takes up the rest of the movie, with occasional flashbacks and brief episodes of fantasy. It all begins in a friendly enough manner. "Well, Victor, you don't look much older." "Good to see you again, Henry." It doesn't take long for it all to turn sour for both of them. There is a good deal of evidence pointing to Hackman as the murderer, not just of the twelve-year old whose body he found, but that of a similar girl in a neighboring town. Hackman, cocky and pleased with himself at first, begins to worry, and for good reason. Freeman is anxious to pin the rap on him and be promoted for having solved two sensation killings.Hackman is confronted with evidence that he's lied to the police about points minor and major. Bit by bit, as Freeman digs into Hackman's married life and sexual proclivities, the suspect begins to sweat up a storm. His life is shredded more with each passing moment. The story betrays is Gallic origins when the two of them get "philosophical" about the nature of humankind -- the relative social value of money, beauty, youth, reputation, privacy, and so on. I don't mean to suggest that it's boring in any way because it's not. It's tense from the start and it just gets tenser until the resolution of the problem, accomplished by deus ex Kodak.A lot depends on the performances of the principals and they deliver the goods. Morgan Freeman, especially, drops the hammer on the role of the subtle but determined detective. There's another secondary detective present at the interrogation, Thomas Jane, who is unlike the carefully controlled Freeman, in that he flings wisecracks and insinuations freely at the suspect.Monica Bellucci is called in to either corroborate Hackman's evolving alibis or to contradict them. She's from north-central Italy, Umbria, but she looks Hispanic and her accent is indistinguishable from that of Puerto Ricans except perhaps to expert linguists. Hackman is thoroughly convincing as the increasingly sweaty murder suspect -- sometimes too convincing. In one scene, when he's supposed to indicate that he's hiding something, he practically turns the shot into a final exam in acting class. For just a few seconds he bludgeons the viewer with his overacting.I enjoyed it very much, although apparently some other reviewers did not.
View MoreThis was a decent movie but i can understand why some people didn't like the ending as it seemed rushed and could have been better. However, this movie is interesting in the way it depicts the demons of the average man. A successful old man who is married to a woman he clearly doesn't deserve and thinks he is entitled to the world. She knows he is a pedophile and therefore doesn't want him to touch her so they have an estranged marriage, while he goes about looking for prostitutes which are the only women who won't reveal his abusive nature and that he actually likes little girls. He thinks it's OK because they are prostitutes and so he can pretend that they are not real girls. When becoming a suspect of such gruesome murders and rapes of little girls he is clearly sickened by it at first, but as we dig deeper his real thoughts come out and we discover that this rich, intelligent, subtle man could easily be the monster that he is being accused of being. The idea of raping and murdering children is not so far-fetched when we know what he has been doing, and we become aware of the fine line between going to prostitutes, where a man can relieve his gruesome nature and get away with it, and actually killing and raping. The only problem is the ending when his wife actually seemed to have felt remorse because she thought he was guilty. Makes no sense after his atrocious behaviour, cheating and attraction to 13 year old girls, she should have run the other way. Overall it was a nice film worth the time, good acting (apart for Thomas Jane).
View MoreUnder Suspicion is a total mind f*ck of an investigation. The story and intrigue are powerful, and extremely well choreographed. It's so twisted and tight, with the right score, a good photography, and smooth editing, that by end you get to hate just about every character.Morgan Freeman, Gene Hackman, Thomas Jane, and Monica Bellucci are just perfect for their role, playing their assigned persona just right and on the edge. It's not for everybody, since its a harsh subject matter and no psychological punches are pulled as Hackman's character is harassed. Also beware, very little happen in this film, the game is all mental.I highly recommend it for the maddening asinine trip you'll get on.
View MoreThis film puts two great actors in a room together and lets them go to work. It doesn't really give them enough to work with and the story features some rather odd details and pointless digressions, but anytime masters of their craft like Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman are given an entire movie to strut their stuff it's always worth watching.Under Suspicion concerns the rape and murder of two young girls in Puerto Rico. Police Captain Victor Benezet (Morgan Freeman) thinks the culprit might be an old frenemy of his, wealthy tax attorney Henry Hearst (Gene Hackman). So on the night Henry is to give a speech at a hurricane relief fundraiser, Victor asks him to come down to the station and answer a few questions. It seems Henry was the one who found the second dead girl and some of the things he told authorities about that discovery don't make sense to Victor. He also has questions about Henry's marriage to the beautiful and much younger Chantal (Monica Belluci).Henry doesn't particularly like being challenged and questions what role Victor's ambition is playing in this case. He also throws up Victor's two failed marriages whenever he gets a bit to insistent on the nature of Henry and Chantal's relationship. As the evening wears on, however, Victor pulls the net tighter and tighter around Henry. He catches him in lies, strips away his secrets and even turns Chantal against him. But do all those things make Henry guilty or just an unhappy, lonely old man?It takes a while for it to get going, but this movie eventually becomes a pleasure to watch. That's entirely due to Hackman and Freeman. The plot they're given to work with is surprisingly skimpy on twists and turns and the dialog is okay but rarely memorable. Once Hackman and Freeman hit their stride, though, none of that matters. These guys are just that good.Proof of that is how they're able to carry this film over a few rough spots. For starters, why in the world is this story set in Puerto Rico? Adding in Thomas Jane as Detective Felix Owens, Victor's partner in Henry's interrogation, three of the 4 lead characters are mainland Americans and the fourth, played by Belucci, looks about as Puerto Rican as I do. In fact, the movie is never clear if Chantal is actually Puerto Rican or from Europe. When you're main characters are two gringos, an African-American and a Frenchwoman trying to pass as some sort of Spanish, there needs to be some explanation for why this tale is set in a Caribbean island nation. Not only is there no explanation, the nature and quality of Puerto Rico plays no role at all in the story. There's no reason why this thing couldn't have been set in Chicago or New York or Detroit unless Hackman and Freeman, who are also executive producers, just wanted a balmy vacation spot when they weren't on the set.The lack of complexity to the murder investigation also means that the script has to manufacture too many extraneous twists to keep things going. A subplot about Victor being pressured to let double-murder suspect Henry walk across the street to give his fundraising speech is fairly stupid. Another about why Chantal has a bad relationship with her sister does have a point but goes on far too long.Belucci does briefly show some skin but while her beauty is stunning, it's not the most striking thing about her in this film. Her face seems locked into one expression, like she got waaaaay too much botox right before they started shooting. It might not be that noticeable in other circumstances but when she's paired with either Hackman or Freeman, Belucci comes off like a mannequin.Under Suspicion is a decent bit of entertainment, especially if you're a fan of its two stars. If you expect much more than Hackman+Freeman goodness, you'll probably be disappointed.
