The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;

To start my review off I will start by say I had no idea what this anime was until I recently found Season 2 (Progressive) and Season 3 (Alternative) were announced. So I thought if I want to watch those I need to watch season 1. This is a very good anime all thing considered. I can see how Teen Titans (Original) got its inspiration. At first though I found it weird that a robot was coming out of a noggin but later on I got used it.What I really find beautiful about this anime is the message behind it and the responsibilities of growing up. My only dislike of the story was the love relationship between Haruko and Naota because Haruto is like 21 and Noata is around 10-12, I know its an anime , but a love romantic relationship between a child and an adult absolutely sickness me. However, that was only drawback but they could have explained what exactly is Haruko and her origin. But Kari Wahlgren did a good job voicing her even though the actual character was annoying.Once when my watch list is free I can't wait to check out season 2. However I hope they bring back some characters from season.If you want an anime which is really mature and is robot associated I would recommend FLCL.

FLCL, aka Fooly Coolly, aka Furi Kuri, is a surreal six part anime from Studio Gainax. It follows twelve year old boy Naota Nandaba whose life changes after a bizarre encounter; one day he is hanging out with his older brother's girlfriend when a girl on a Vespa crashes into him. The girl, Haruko Haruhara initially thinks she has killed him but it turns out he is okay apart from a bump on his head. Strangely the bump grows into a horn like protuberance which later grows into a giant robot and breaks off… after that things get weirder! I won't describe more of what happens; it has to be seen to be believed.Long before I watched this OVA series I'd heard that it was a bit strange but wasn't sure if that was a good thing or not; now I've seen it I can say it is a good thing! The plot may be strange but if you can accept the happenings it does make sense… just about. The animation isn't of the highest quality but that suits the story; at times the style changes so that it looks as though we are looking at pages of the manga. I watched most of the series in Japanese with English subtitles and thought it sounded good; I also watched one episode in English and even though I rarely watch dubbed anime I thought the English voice actors did a good job. If you are an anime fan I'd definitely recommend checking out this classic series although I'm not sure I'd recommend it as an introduction to anime as it might be a bit too weird!

Let's set the record straight: I am not generally a fan of anime. I mean, I've heard some things that imply a lot of the shows have a deeper meaning and are actually fantastic. From what limited selection I've seen, though, I have developed the same view as most people: the majority of anime is built of visually stunning, incomprehensible action. What you see is what you get; there isn't really anything more. Maybe I haven't given it much time or thought, but that's my first impression.On the surface, FLCL (or Fooly Coolly) fits this model exactly. In fact, if a friend ever walked into the room for five minutes while you were watching FLCL, (s)he might think that you are clinically insane. To clarify, let me give you a run down of the first episode. I'm inclined to include the spoiler alert here, though I think this is the kind of show for which it doesn't really matter to have a bit of plot spoiled. Also, you might want to know what you're getting into before you dive into FLCL.BEGIN SPOILER ALERT. A boy (main character) and a girl are fooling around under a bridge. They begin to walk on the bridge, when, out of nowhere, a maniacal woman driving a moped runs into the boy, which knocks him unconscious. The woman freaks out and begins to administer CPR, at which point the boy wakes up. She then proceeds to hit him square in the head with a motorized bass guitar. He grows an enormous horn-like bump from the blow. Later in the episode, this bump sprouts into a robot with a television for a head. The robot exits the boy's head, along with another robot, and the two robots have an epic battle (the boy is totally fine). The TV-headed robot wins, and goes on to live at the boy's house as a housekeeper. And believe me, it's even weirder than it sounds. END SPOILER ALERTThe setting is modern-day Japan, a fictional town called Mabase. The main character is a twelve-year-old boy named Naota. His much older brother, Tasuku, has recently moved to America to become a pro baseball player. Meanwhile, Naota seems to have become depressed, and he's fooling around with his brother's old girlfriend, Mamimi (who is in high school). He is incessantly bored, and he says that nothing interesting ever happens in his town. Enter Haruhara Haruko, the woman who will change everything.It turns out that this is a beautiful story about growing up. There is a very strong theme of teenage angst at the heart of it all. That's why I believe the writers chose exactly the right medium for their story. The crazy anime stuff almost feels like one long anxiety attack for our main character. There are also sexual undertones throughout the show, as well as themes of responsibility, risk-taking, and, you know, love. All of the ingredients for becoming an adult. I read from one reviewer who said that he read from another reviewer (seriously) that watching FLCL is like falling in love for the first time. I really, really like that analogy.This story is all about the characters. The list is very short; there are a few grade school kids, a high school girl, a crazy woman, a couple of government officials, and Naota's dad and grandpa (and a robot). At the center of it all are Naota, Mamimi, and Haruko, all three of whom are incredibly, incredibly dynamic (some of the aforementioned are also dynamic characters, most notably Ninamori, a grade school girl). It's truly a pleasure to watch. The more I watch, the more I love Mamimi. She's just about ready to go off the deep end, and she really desperately needs support. Fooly Coolly (abbreviated FLCL) is so outrageous that it virtually jumps out of the screen and hits you on the head with a bass guitar. As you start watching it, the serious emotional drama involving the lead character Naotas, a 12-year-old boy, keeps you grounded as the crazy sci-fi drama unfolds. It may take a few episodes before you get that there is an actual storyline though. I have never seen anything like this before with the possible exception of Excel Saga only FLCL has much more style. Because of the sexual references it is definitely not for little kids. It is extremely hilarious, weird and loads of fun. Just hang on to the yellow Vespa and enjoy the ride.
