It isn't all that great, actually. Really cheesy and very predicable of how certain scenes are gonna turn play out. However, I guess that's the charm of it all, because I would consider this one of my guilty pleasures.

One of the film's great tricks is that, for a time, you think it will go down a rabbit hole of unrealistic glorification.

This is a sad excuse for .. for whatever it's supposed to be. Thriller? Psychological drama? Supernatural? SciFi? Who knows. It took the first 4 episodes of Season 1 just to figure out what the plot was supposed to be. And then they sunk into gore and violence because they apparently couldn't figure out what to write. Plot twists are one thing ... being deceptive and disingenuous by not showing key pieces until episodes later isn't good writing.

Fortitude is intriguing and becomes more so. It moves slowly so you become complacent and then someone steps out from behind a door and they have a large sharp knife in hand and they are not cleaning fish. The landscape is beautiful and cold. The pace of the series is an acquired taste and you may wish to think you have finally grasped what the hell is going on and then you find you're as cold as the frozen landscape.Nothing seems to be as it first appears. The local police hero is well find out for yourself. The innocent, well on second thought not sure there are any in this series. Maybe I should say victims but I think they are all victims or will be. It would be nice if they solved something once in a while and could move on to a new twist.I just found this series and don't even know how long it will last. The cast in this does a really frightening and fantastic job.....some real psychos.....

There are already good reviews here describing what and how this series is great. I just want to add a few bits.~ Global warming is upon us, human greed and bad attitudes present, and a spin on killer zombies that totally works!~ There are 8 women characters in . Like the series, each is beautifully multi-layered and the characters develop slowly. It's rare to have so many interesting women characters in one place. Great writing! ~ There are several moving and surprising love stories, also beautifully developed.I stopped watching Fortitude because I couldn't keep up with the heavy English, Norwegian, and Swedish accents. However, using subtitles filled in just enough and I'm so pleased to have met this Nordic Noir.

Every component of Fortitude has been done before, much better and a lot quicker than this agonizingly slow series. You get the feeling early that there is something unreal going on in the isolated Arctic town of Fortitude. The brutal and bizarre deaths are investigated by Dan Anderssen (Richard Dormer)and you can tell he knows something. There is a visiting detective from London, a Governor trying to launch a business venture and a few other characters that are mildly interesting. The problem is that this show moves at a snails pace and is very confusing to follow. Others watching with me fell asleep.I think if you took the movie The Thing, stretch the movie out to 25 episodes, and mixed in some scenes from Fargo you would have a series very much like but a whole lot better than Fortitude.
