Good start, but then it gets ruined
Simple and well acted, it has tension enough to knot the stomach.
View MoreThis is a must-see and one of the best documentaries - and films - of this year.
View MoreVery good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.
View MoreLark Rise to Candleford caught me quite off guard as I watched one, then two, then three episodes when suddenly I was consumed and watched nothing else until making it through the last episode. The show is a period piece about life in the old English countryside (mid to late 1800's). The characters are mostly likable and the stories optimistic stories of family, friends, and the love it takes to keep them all going. It is also about the period of great change during this period that strained the vision of people as what they did for a living became obsolete (much like today). I loved that optimism prevailed in the story line even if some of the characters were a little over the top. It is a show that generations can watch together without the concern for unacceptable subjects, or vile scenes suddenly being thrust upon them putting some in an awkward position to explain. Innocent to a fault, but touching none the less. It saddens me that they only produced 3 and a half seasons as the story could have gone on much longer. Especially in the final season which was a combination of meaningless stories combined with those that were rushed to try and bring some closure to the stories. Would four more episodes have really killed the BBC when the show was one of the most popular going into its final season? But businesses don't care so this is nothing new. The positive is that it is a great show and well worth anyone's time to watch and savor.
View MoreThis show makes me happy! Apart from the great acting, lovely sceneries and endearing characters it's the perfect show to watch after a busy day at work. There is a simple wisdom in the words spoken and the development of the various story lines. I find myself smiling a lot while watching and the humor, above all the slapstick like scenes, make me laugh out loud. My favorite character is Minnie. As many times as she drops a brick, her honesty and unawareness of social conventions let her say what others may never dare. Of course her being accepted the way she is, in fact everyone lets the others be the way they are, is highly soothing. I see a lot of myself in Miss Lane. I must admit i have as many 'one weaknesses' as she does and that's fine. If you should decide to watch the show I hope you'll have the same feelings of happiness.
View MoreI am quite late to getting around to this show. I never heard of it till after I became a fanatic of Downton Abbey which then caused me to love Brendan Coyle. (Mr. Bates is my favorite!) I started watching Lark Rise to Candleford simply because he was in it, not even knowing what to expect and I am so glad I did! I adored every minute of it!I will admit though that I just finished the series a few moments ago and I am a little disappointed in some of the loose ends I would've liked to see tied up.SPOILER ALERT: I would've really liked to see Robert Timmins come home to his family. I'm sure there were reasons why he wasn't on series 4 but seeing as I am biased since he's the reason I started the show, I wish I could've at least seen him arrive back home to his family. I also wish we could've known a little more about where Laura's life was headed. Obviously she was to become a writer and I guess it's safe to assume she ended up with Daniel but we didn't get the neat and tidy bow wrapping it all up like with Alf and Minnie. (That part however made me very happy) END OF SPOILERWith all that said, I am so happy to see how most loose ends were tied and very pleasantly. All in all it was an amazing show and will forever be on my list of favorites. I am just so sad it was only a 4 series. I also plan on reading the books. :)
View MoreI get so tired of modern drama based around dark, cynical, unpleasant characters. Lark Rise to Candleford is so different. The characters in this little community manage to rise above their conflicts, see past each others' foibles, and support and love each other. The program's good-heartedness is reinforced by a gorgeous soundtrack, beautiful camera work, amazing sets, scenery, and costumes, fine directing, and a rich cast of interesting characters.Granted, it's a fairy tale, but it's a mighty pleasant one. And after all, what's so bad about with having one show on television that actually leaves you feeling better about people?
