That was an excellent one.
Pretty Good
A lot of fun.
A clunky actioner with a handful of cool moments.
My husband has been binge watching Magic City and I cannot believe just how lame it is. It reminds me of those horrible soap operas that other people's moms used to watch when we were kids. Crappy dialogue. Cheesy story. Cheap sets. Dreadful acting. Even the occasional joke falls completely flat. Pathetic! How did it last 2 seasons?
View MoreThe writing for Magic City is some of the best you will find on television of any era, and the actors do justice to the material. The main character Ike is layered, complex, and nuanced in a way that allows you to connect to both his inner and outer self. Rarely has an uncontrived character been this complex on television, even the legendary Tony Soprano. Jeffrey Dean Morgan gives the performance of his life. There is beauty and ugliness everywhere, and the show delves into the duality of all. The locations, the people, the politics and the struggles are all given their time center stage. Not knowing Miami at the time I can't speak to the authenticity of the sets, but it feels right enough to forgive any minor sins.It never feels rushed until midway through the second season when they must have been told there wouldn't be a third, and even then the obviously sped up plot and denouement are satisfying and artfully crafted.Treat Magic City like a fine wine of which only a few bottles remain. Savour every drop as it will stay in your memory long after the glass is empty.
View MoreI happened to come across this show while looking for a rating on Magic Mike. Needless to say, I decided to give the pilot a go and immediately fell in love with this period piece. The acting is on point, the clothing and use of cars of the period grabbed my attention. The script is well written with all the characters well developed and the casting brilliant. You are swept up in the building of the story to see if good and conflicted will triumph over bad and evil in each of the characters. I do believe that this show had a season 3 and 4 in it and I would have offered my services. Very sad to see it cancelled surely another channel like HBO could pick it up.
View MoreJust like most new show the first episode was not overwhelming. It was hard to get used to the 60's and all the new characters. Personally, I didn't liked it so much but kept watching for Jeffrey Dean Morgan because of his phenomenal performance in Greys Anatomy. (Later on Jeffrey fades away and all the attention is on Steven Strait ;))But back to Magic city: It's a lot like Sopranos, a guy who just wants to make a earning for his lovely family. Even if it means to kill sometime. It's a lot like Sopranos but it is not Sopranos. Why? Because it all takes place in the roaring 60's with Frank Sinatra, upcoming gambling and still a real class difference. The first episodes aren't that great, aren't that bad. If you just want to have one hour fun, rent a movie. This series is really forming a plot from episode one to....? So with every episode the story gets better and better. It's got great potential to be the next great Sopranos.
