Over There Audience Reviews

Softwing Most undeservingly overhyped movie of all time??
Matylda Swan It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties.
Sanjeev Waters A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.
Philippa All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
Samuel Golub After watching Generation Kill, being an Army Reservist, I decided on watching this. Turns out Over There is god awful. It's really, really, really, just plain terrible. The effects are bad, a 40 mike mike video game-like dismembering the complete upper half of an insurgent across a fine border''dismembering''line, the stereotypes, unbelievable/unrealistic conduct of military personnel. Like said in the reviews here many times before: Generation Kill kills everything out of this crap series .. :')Jesus Christ it's bad, did I already say it was bad? The only good thing about Over There are the communication procedures.
Dondi0 Got lent this as a box-set by a friend after I lent them Generation Kill. They definitely got the better deal. The characters are paper thin cut-outs of the modern military movie mould plodding through the same old predictable arcs. The dialogue is clunky and clichéd and is either perfunctorily expositional or feels as though the writer's are simply making trite speeches via the mouths of their characters. The action sequences feel cheap and fake, are poorly directed and edited. They rely heavily on erratic fast zooms, whip-pans and student style post-production effects in a laughably dated attempt to feel hip. I don't know where this was filmed but it looks more like the Californian desert than Iraq. Also there is barely any actual dramatic tension. The whole thing is as mawkish as it's overly literal syrup-rock closing credits theme song.To paraphrase a previous poster Generation Kill literally kills this stone dead and I bet it cost less to make too. Admittedly Generation Kill is a lot more demanding of it's audience but the rewards are ten-fold. It actually attempts to take an objective view of the Iraq situation whereas Over There has a very pro-American subtext barely covered by a thin veneer of apparent objectivity. The structure, language, casting, performances, plot, direction, action humour and dialogue in Generation Kill are all superlative and make Over There look as dramatically dated as an episode of E.R. Goes to Iraq. You can buy the complete run of Generation Kill for 15 quid on Amazon right now. Cheap at twice the price.
nae21915 If i could give this show a higher rating I would! I know this is a little late for a review or comment, but never really thought about posting something online until now. I live overseas with my parents whom are American, but go to school in the states and when i brought this show back over to Saudi Arabia for them to watch, i never got my DVD's back. The show then got passed around the camp ever sense then and I've watched and recommended this series still to this day to anyone who asks for something to watch. This is so real to what goes on over there. There are people who are friends of our family and live on the camp we do in Saudi still asking if there is a season two coming out. So if there ever were another season to come out there's plenty of support from the overseas expats.
f-dehousse First rate script, first rate filming (which benefited substantially from the experiences of Saving private Ryan and Band of brothers), first rate actors. It seems to be a first for a TV series to provide such an accurate vision (sometimes very tough) of an ongoing war. The script plays admirably between the front line and the home front. It also shows admirably the extreme difficulty of a military intervention in a far away country with fully different cultural backgrounds, plus the language barrier. In an amazing way, it succeeds in presenting a balanced (and neutral) vision of the coalition's intervention in Irak. Both pros and contras will thus be disappointed. Should be mandatory seeing in all modern occidental armies.
