Great example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.
View MoreI think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
View MoreThis film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.
View MoreI've left this film unrated because it's either a very bad film, or a very good one, and I can't decide -- rationally or emotionally. It's billed as a "rethinking" of the Ferrara/Keitel "Bad Lieutenant". The overall story is the same -- a vice-addicted policeman investigating an horrific crime -- and it reuses many of the same scenes and situations. The original was and remains a classic, so I suppose there was no point in "rethinking" it without a drastic change of tone. I agree with those who see it as black comedy, with a nominally happy/redemptive ending. We first note the comedy when a physically and mentally disheveled Cage enters his boss's office, and is asked "Do you think you can handle this case?" Cage pulls his jacket open -- exposing a huge .44 Magnum shoved cowboy-style under his belt -- and declaims "Why shouldn't I?" I laughed out loud.A hunched-from-back-pain Cage stumbles through most of the film resembling a cross between Ed Sullivan and Detective Fish. (Really.) The problem isn't Cage's performance (he is, when he wants to be, an exceptional actor), but the failure of the other characters -- especially his boss -- to see that he is Thoroughly & Completely F***ed Up. (No doubt they would have no problem with Bela Lugosi running a day-care center.) This is mostly Herzog's fault, for not eliciting more-plausible performances from the cast.On the other hand, I like the fact we see Cage's descent. He starts off a decent (if cynical) cop whose back is injured saving a prisoner from Katrina's flood waters. He's in near-continuous pain, and has zero desire to take pain killers -- but he has to, and his fall begins. The Capra-esque ending resolves all of Cage's police problems. The prisoner he saved -- now reformed -- comforts Cage and (apparently) turns him away from drugs."The Bad Lieutenant" falls in the "see it and decide for yourself" category.
View MoreMost of the reviews for this film fall into one of two categories: the ones that claim it is a misunderstood work whose esoteric nuances leave the masses bemused; or the ones that label it simply a monument to ineptitude. I subscribe to neither view.Well... at least not entirely.Bad Lieutenant Port Of Call does contain certain conceits that may be likened to pretensions. But to tell the truth I love the conceits. Some of them are really absurd and I get a real hoot out of Herzog's audacity whenever they occur. We all know which scenes I'm referring to & there's no need to introduce spoilers here. Suffice to say - reptiles, dancing & oxygen tanks are involved. But however audacious the pretensions are they do not elevate this film to the level of art. It is not a misunderstood masterpiece. This is not to say, however, that Herzog's film is totally without artistic merit. The film's detractors usually complain about Cage being a poor substitute for Harvey Keitel. That the storyline does not meld seamlessly enough with the first Bad Lieutenant film. Or that the storyline is erratic & poorly developed. These are for the main part subjective criticisms & should not deter viewers from seeing this film. Or from seeing it for what it really is: a dark, quirky & sometimes comical thriller about a detective trying his utmost to do his job while wrestling with his own inner demons.Bad Lieutenant Port Of Call does not fall into the category of flawed masterpiece. At the same time it cannot be called a bad film. To me it's just a good thriller. Oh yeh... and did I mention that it's a real hoot?
View MoreThis film is not at all what I expected from Herzog - I haven't laughed so much in a long time during a movie. What we've got here is an over-the-top, crazy ride with the best Nic Cage in years. Funny little anecdote on the side (as told by the director, Werner Herzog): when Cage asked for advice on how to best approach his role, Herzog told him to go with "evil is bliss". Cage obviously obliged - and the result is hilarious. This film got a lot of negativity because apparently, people expected a serious, dark drama (knowing the original, I did, too). Well, Herzog had other plans: this is a wickedly funny black comedy that borders on satire. Fantastic acting by all involved, inventive camera and just one hell of a ride. Herzog's most entertaining film to date and Cage's best performance in ages. 9 stars out of 10.Favorite Films: http://www.imdb.com/list/ls054200841/Lesser-known Masterpieces: http://www.imdb.com/list/ls070242495/Favorite Low-Budget and B-movies: http://www.imdb.com/list/ls054808375/Favorite TV-Shows reviewed: http://www.imdb.com/list/ls075552387/
View Morewhen i look at new films and see young actors around the world i have no doubt they are talented as i have seen a lot of films but when it comes to good acting there is one legend i have to name him you can love him or hate him he is best the name is Nicolas Cage i have seen almost every film of him many of them are bad but the best thing is that with cage presence any project becomes awesome this one is a stand alone film its not a sequel or a remake of a 1992 film bad lieutenant i have not seen that one but it is considered one of the best films ever made.the plot:Terence Mcdonagh is a new Orleans cop who is investigating the murder of 5 immigrants from Senegal he is not the usual good cop not even a hard cop in fact he is a drug lover himself uses different methods to arrest & interrogate he gets himself involved with criminals time is running out with Terrence suffering with bad habits will he solve the mystery or losses his job the answer is in this film.this is a very different film i was expecting some serious action or suspense but there is plenty of comedy here with good dialogs that made me laugh hard the things Terrence was doing could cost him his job or worse even get jailed for life having sex on the road with another mans girlfriend using cocaine and alcohol & use verbal abuse on everyone.the cast:Eva Mendes,Val Kilmer and the rest cast did amazing job including Shea Whigham who in one scene keeps on repeating oh yeah!oh oh yeah line it was hilarious but Nicolas Cage deserves the award he was so funny with lines like shoot him again the soul is still dancing and ill kill all of you he easily stole the show.overall even if your not a Nicolas Cage fan you will still enjoy this tale of The Bad Lieutenant:Port of Call New Orleans 2009 my rating is 8/10:Recommended
