Instead, you get a movie that's enjoyable enough, but leaves you feeling like it could have been much, much more.

It's a good bad... and worth a popcorn matinée. While it's easy to lament what could have been...

No movie has been so unsettling for me. I don't know how I feel about this movie. I love it very very much. And at the same time, I equally hate it. The idea put behind this movie is good. You want to tell the story about a character, it's okay. Bruce Robertson is a very well written character and his story and whatever he does is compelling. We get a very good exposition of what he appears to be, what he actually is and what made him what he is and all of those back stories. You can see his love, you can definitely see his envy and anger, his desperation, etc. Whatever the character does is very well justified. And that's basically the main part of the storyline. Also, James McAvoy as Bruce Robertson - one of his greatest performances ever. He gives a life to the character ..... literally. This type of character isn't a new one, but I haven't seen such a character given so much of complexity and depth. As a dark psychological thriller-ish drama, the movie is good. But at the same time, it is filthy. As I said, the filthy parts justify the character and the story itself. But those parts, within themselves, feel very uncomfortable. Also, some of such scenes are quite unnecessarily elaborated. It focuses (sometimes) unnecessarily on nudity. Some of the short filthy clips could've been deleted. But again, if we choose to tell the story otherwise, will it work so well? I don't think so. There are a number of people who love this movie, for the similar reasons why I loved it. And a number of people hate it, due to it's filthiness. I don't really like the filthiness, but I love the overall story and appreciate that it has been told in the best way imaginable, in my opinion. So, I don't know how I feel about this. For the time being, I will give it a "B" and a "6.5/10". If I was supposed to say liked it, I would definitely give it an "A" and an "8.8/10" and if I was supposed to hate it, a "D" and a "3.9/10", probably. I watched it around three times or so. If I ever watch it again, I might be a little more sure.

It's been over a year since I saw this film, probably even longer than I think. It is one of my favourite movies and I chose to do a 21 page analysis on it for school while we could've settled for 5-10 pages. But once you watch a movie as often as I used to watch Filth, you want to take a break. And it's good to take that break, because after a while you can appreciate the little things in the film. Like this time watching this movie I was astonished by the cinematography, especially the lighting and the colours, as if I hadn't paid attention during the first time. I had, but for some reason it all felt very new to me. It's probably the amount of movies I've watched between this and the last time I watched Filth. There are many differences between the novel and the movie. Some of them are good, because you couldn't fit all that in the movie, and Irvine Welsh always takes his time before the actual twists come into the story. It's obvious Jon S. Baird had to tighten up Welsh's novel quite a bit considering Welsh's style and how many details he fits into a story. But if there's one thing that really bothers me, it's that the murdered Japanese man in the beginning was a black man in the book. It seems like a minor change but it isn't, and it will always, always bug me.Of course there's obvious difference between any book and the movie - a movie gives a face to a character. And in the novel Bruce Robertson is awful, and it's hard to feel bad for him in any way, but when he's given James McAvoy's face and talent, it's harder to not feel bad for him. You know he's horrible. There's nothing about Bruce Robertson you could actually like, but it's James McAvoy's fault some viewers might feel bad for him. That's the only reason James McAvoy shouldn't play this part. McAvoy is amazing, he's truly phenomenal as Bruce Robertson, but he's also too sympathetic. But while this film is completely awful, it's also hilarious. Just like with most of Welsh's stuff.

First let me state that I only watched this piece of garbage movie because of the enormous amount of respect I have for author Irvine Welsh, having said that you can probably guess that I am a massive fan of Danny Boyle's masterclass of a film 'Trainspotting'. This movie is not like trainspotting: Meaning this is a piece of steaming garbage and trainspotting is a masterpiece. I didn't go in expecting it to be as good as trainspotting, I only expected a wild Scottish ride of drugs, sex and violence that author Irvine Welsh so clearly loves to write about. And to a certain extent i guess it delivered but it wasn't tasteful, it wasn't funny and it wasn't wild. It was a boring waste of time with a terrible main character that is one of the biggest scumbags ever portrayed in film history and is in no way charismatic or likable. But to go back to trainspotting, Mark Renton is a scumbag to a certain extent as well but he has charisma and a drive to get out of his lifestyle, and the most important thing, he stays true to his character. Unlike Bruce Robertson who I absolutely despise, and i could've excepted that if he stayed true to his character and had anything remotely redeeming about him.But does this movie deliver on the outrageousness that it claims it has. No not really its just pure filth, none of it has any purpose whatsoever, this movie feels like a teenage Disney star who try's to shed their image by being edgy and behaving poorly for no reason whatsoever. The only reason this movie doesn't get a worse overall rating is because it did have some film making merit in terms of the way it is shot and directed. James McAvoy does delivers a stellar performance in this film, its just a shame its not for a better movie.Bottom line is that this movie sucks, its terrible. Don't WATCH EVER!

James McAvoy is awesome and is reason enough alone to watch this. Even when you don't understand what the characters are saying, McAvoy makes you not care. Joanne Froggatt and the rest of the cast are great, but really its James's movie. What an actor. You never really know what to expect with this movie, predictable it is not. It's the most deranged comedy I ever watched. Taking the bad-cop genre to the extreme, Filth lives up to its title and then some. For the first half-hour it's got a full-on energy followed by a complex plot. An alcoholic cop is having animal-themed hallucinations. The further the character goes to get his promotion the crazier things get on screen. Do not let the uptight middle of the road critics reviews fool you. While it isn't a movie you'll call your favorite, it's a wild ride and one I recommend taking. if you can stomach it.
